Steven Mandel
Steven Mandel (born 1969) is an American music producer, audio engineer, songwriter, record label executive, radio DJ, and podcaster. He is also music producer for The Roots on ''The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon''. Mandel has produced music for The Roots, Elvis Costello, Todd Rundgren, Squeeze and Erykah Badu among others. In 2016, Mandel co-founded the record label, J.M.I Recordings, which specializes in recording, mixing, and mastering in analog. He is co-host of "Labeled On WKCR" on Columbia University’s WKCR radio station, and was a member of "Team Supreme" on the Questlove Supreme podcast 2016-2025. Early life Mandel grew up in the hamlets of Bardonia and Nanuet in Rockland County, New York. Electric Lady Studios
Electric Lady Studios is a recording studio in Greenwich Village, New York City. It was commissioned by rock musician Jimi Hendrix in 1968 and designed by architect John Storyk and audio engineer Eddie Kramer. It was completed by 1970. Hendrix spent only ten weeks recording in Electric Lady before Death of Jimi Hendrix, his death that year, but it quickly became a famed studio used by many top-selling recording artists from the 1970s onwards, including Led Zeppelin, Stevie Wonder, and David Bowie. At the turn of the 21st century, Electric Lady served as a home for the innovative Soulquarians collective, but fell into financial hardship and disarray in the 2000s. Analog Recording
Analog recording is a category of techniques used for the recording of analog signals. This enables later playback of the recorded analog audio. Analog audio recording began with mechanical systems such as the phonautograph and phonograph. Later, electronic techniques such as wire recording, wire and tape recorder, tape recording were developed. Analog recording methods store analog signals directly in or on the media. The signal may be stored as a physical texture on a phonograph record, or a fluctuation in the field strength of a magnetic recording. Analog transmission methods use analog signals to distribute audio content. Questlove
Ahmir K. Thompson (born January 20, 1971), known professionally as Questlove (stylized as ), is an American drummer, record producer, disc jockey, filmmaker, music journalist, and actor. He is the drummer and joint frontman (with Black Thought) for the hip-hop band the Roots. The Roots have been the in-house band for ''The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon'' since 2014, after having fulfilled the same role on '' Late Night with Jimmy Fallon''. Questlove is also one of the producers of the 2015 cast album of the Broadway musical ''Hamilton''. He has also co-founded the websites Okayplayer and OkayAfrica. Soulquarians
The Soulquarians were a rotating collective of experimental Black music artists active during the late 1990s and early 2000s. Initially formed by singer and multi-instrumentalist D'Angelo, drummer and producer Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson, and producer-rapper J Dilla. They were later joined by singer-songwriter Erykah Badu, trumpeter Roy Hargrove, keyboardist James Poyser, singer Bilal, bassist Pino Palladino, rapper-producers Q-Tip and Mos Def, and rappers Talib Kweli and Common. Prior to its formation, Q-Tip, Common, Mos Def, and Talib Kweli were members of the Native Tongues collective, whilst Q-Tip's original group A Tribe Called Quest served as one of the inspirations behind the Soulquarians. Russell Elevado (born 1966 in the Philippines) is a recording engineer and record producer based in New York City. Description Russell Elevado is a multi-Grammy award-winning record producer and recording engineer, born in the Philippines in 1966. His family immigrated to the United States in 1972 and grew up in New York City. Elevado's career started in 1986 when he started an internship at producer Arthur Baker (producer), Arthur Baker's studio called Shakedown Studios in New York City. The Institute of Audio Research (IAR) was an educational institution in New York City. Students of IAR were offered a wide variety of academic programs in the field of music production and audio engineering. Students could choose from courses in audio electronics, digital music production, mixing music, and audio processing and storage, among others.
