T. Rex (originally Tyrannosaurus Rex) were an English rock band formed in London in 1967 by singer-songwriter and guitarist Marc Bolan, who was their leader, frontman and only consistent member. Though initially associated with the psychedelic folk genre, Bolan began to change the band's style towards electric rock in 1969, and shortened their name to T. Rex the following year. This development culminated in 1970 with their first significant hit single "Ride a White Swan", and the group soon became pioneers of the glam rock movement. From 1970 to 1973, T. Rex were extremely popular in the UK, with a run of eleven top ten singles, four of which reached number one: " Hot Love", " Get It On", "Telegram Sam" and "Metal Guru". Bill Legend
Bill Legend (born William Arthur Fifield; 8 May 1944) is an English musician and former drummer for glam rock band T. Rex during their most successful period. His life and career have been discussed in multiple published books and other works about the band. Biography One of three children, Legend worked as a commercial artist after leaving school, while playing the drums in a variety of bands. He was drumming under his real name for a group called "Legend", fronted by Mickey Jupp, when Marc Bolan, the man behind the new-found success of T. Gloria Richetta Jones (born October 19, 1945) is an American singer and songwriter who first found success in the United Kingdom, being recognized there as "The Queen of Northern Soul". "Metal Guru" is a song by the British rock band T. Rex, written by Marc Bolan. It was the band's fourth (and final) number one on the UK Singles Chart when it topped the chart for four weeks from May–June 1972. It was also included on the album '' The Slider'' in 1972. Song and recording Bolan himself described the song's apparent religious references as this: The backing track for "Metal Guru" was recorded during initial sessions for '' The Slider'' between 8-12 March 1972 at Strawberry Studios, Chateau d'Herouville in France. Telegram Sam
"Telegram Sam" is a song written by Marc Bolan for the British rock group T. Rex, appearing on their 1972 album '' The Slider''. The song was their third UK number one single, remaining at the top of the charts for two weeks. Background and recording "Telegram Sam" was allegedly written by Bolan about his manager Tony Secunda (''T''elegram ''S''am = ''T''ony ''S''ecunda) who was his 'main man' in respect to being Bolan's manager and narcotics supplier. The lyrics feature numerous figures such as Bobby (a natural born poet who is just outta sight), Golden Nose Slim (who knows where you been), Jungle Faced Jake (about whom no mistake must be made) and Purple Pie Pete (whose lips are like lightning and capable of generating a heat power sufficient to liquefy females). Glam rock is a style of rock music that developed in the United Kingdom in the early 1970s and was primarily defined by the flamboyant clothing, makeup, and hairstyles of its musicians, particularly platform shoes and glitter. "Ride a White Swan" is a song by English band T. Rex. It was released as a stand-alone single on 9 October 1970 by record label Fly, and was the first single credited under the band's new name. It was written by the group's singer, guitarist and founder Marc Bolan. The song was included on the US version of the 1970 album, '' T. Rex''. Richard Anthony Newman (born 17 March 1943) is an English rock drummer. He was at various times a member of the bands Sounds Incorporated, May Blitz, Three Man Army, T. Rex, and Boxer. He has performed with Little Richard, Jeff Beck, David Bowie, George Harrison, Robert Palmer, Eric Clapton, Donovan, Mick Ronson, Gene Vincent, Crystal Gayle, The Everly Brothers and others. Brian Keith "Herbie" Flowers (19 May 1938 – 5 September 2024) was an English musician specialising in bass guitar, double bass and tuba. He was a member of groups including Blue Mink, T. Rex and Sky and was also a prolific session musician. Miller Anderson (musician)
Miller Anderson (born 12 April 1945) is a UK-based blues and rock guitarist and singer. He worked extensively with Ian Hunter in the formative years of the 1960s, before either of them achieved significant success. They worked in bands such as the Scenery and At Last The 1958 Rock 'n' Roll Show (later called Charlie Woolfe), and Anderson is referenced in the title track of Hunter's 1976 album '' All American Alien Boy'' ("well I remember all the good times me and Miller enjoyed, up and down the M1 in some luminous yo-yo toy").
