Steno Medal
The Steno Medal, created in 1969, is awarded bthe Geological Society of Denmarkto honor a prominent geologist. It was named after the Dane Niels Steensen (also known as Nicolaus Steno), who is recognized internationally for his effort in the field of geological science. Steno (1638–1686) made groundbreaking contributions to crystallography as well as stratigraphy, which are fundamental disciplines in geology. The Steno medal is awarded every four to five years. It is constructed by the Royal court medalist Harald Salomon and stored at the Royal Danish Mint. The establishment of the medal was made possible through a gift from the mining company Kryolitselskabet Øresund A/S. Stephen Moorbath
Stephen Erwin Moorbath (9 May 1929–16 October 2016) was a British geochronologist. He set up (1956–58) and then directed the Geological Age and Isotope Research Group at the University of Oxford, before retiring. Research Moorbath and his collaborators demonstrated the great gap between Scourian (2,600 million years old) and Laxfordian (1,600 million years old) gneisses in northwest Scotland. He established the basic mineral age pattern of the Scottish and Irish Caledonides (420–450 million years old) and interpreted it as a cooling-uplift interval. He also pioneered lead isotope studies of ancient gneisses, showing that much of the Lewisian existed over 2,900 million years ago. Stephen dated the oldest rocks yet known on the Earth (more than 3,800 million years old) from west Greenland, and applied the rubidium–strontium method to date Torridonian sediments. Katharina Von Salis Perch Nielsen
Katharina von Salis Perch-Nielsen (born 26 October 1940) is a Swiss geologist and orienteering competitor. She is a retired Adjunct Professor at the Department of Earth Sciences at ETH Zurich in Switzerland. She retired 1 October 2001. During her scientific career, as a Professor in the Micropaleontology at the Geological Institute at ETH Zurich, she was highly engaged in promoting gender equality in sciences and active in fighting to improve the position of girls and women in sciences at Swiss universities and high schools. She was at the origin of the Office of Equal Opportunities for Men and Women that exists at ETH Zurich since 1993. Sedimentary Basin
Sedimentary basins are region-scale depressions of the Earth's crust where subsidence has occurred and a thick sequence of sediments have accumulated to form a large three-dimensional body of sedimentary rock. They form when long-term subsidence creates a regional depression that provides accommodation space for accumulation of sediments. Over millions or tens or hundreds of millions of years the deposition of sediment, primarily gravity-driven transportation of water-borne eroded material, acts to fill the depression. As the sediments are buried, they are subject to increasing pressure and begin the processes of compaction and lithification that transform them into sedimentary rock.
