St. Kitts Scenic Railway is a long narrow-gauge railway line along the coastline of the island of Saint Kitts and Nevis, St. Kitts in the eastern Caribbean, with a track gauge of . History The original track was laid from 1912 to 1926, to deliver sugar cane from the plantations to the new centralised sugar mill in Basseterre. The sugar mill was built by a group of investors in 1912, to reduce processing costs and increase profitability by applying the principle of economies of scale, due to a sugar price drop caused by the worldwide introduction of sugar beets. Previously, each plantation had its own sugar mill. Transport in Saint Christopher and Nevis (a two-island federation) includes normal road traffic, public buses, taxis, ferries, airports, and one railway. Basseterre is the hub for all major roads in Saint Christopher. Charlestown, Nevis is the equivalent hub in Nevis. Driving is on the left. The speed limit in settled areas is 40 km/h, with special caution to be taken around school zones. In rural areas the speed limit is 60 km/h. Colorado Railcar was a manufacturer of railroad railroad car, rolling stock—railcars and diesel multiple unit commuter vehicles. Both products came in single- and double-level versions. It shut down in 2008, with its assets being purchased by US Railcar. History The company was first organized as Rader Railcar.
