Several of the songs, including the lead single "Love Earth", were written while taking long walks in the woods around Young's Colorado home. He explains, "I was whistling it in the forest, that melody. And I recorded it on a flip phone. And I put it on my computer, and months later I wrote the song, just after hearing me whistle the melody, walking along through the forest. Lofgren explains, "In April or May, Neil reached out and said, 'Look, we're not going to be able to play until next summer at the earliest. It's just weird to not do anything as a band for a year and a half. I have four songs I wrote. Why don't we get together, safely, in the Rockies and just be old friends with instruments on and maybe record a few songs?' He had in mind that maybe we'd do that a few times in different locations, every couple of months get together somewhere safely — with testing and masks and all that stuff, ...

The album was Young's first collaboration with backing band Crazy Horse since their 2003 album, '' Greendale'', and its associated tour. He explains in a June 2012 interview with Rolling Stone's Austin Scaggs: "Back in 1964 or '65, the Squires were playing a folk club in Thunder Bay, Ontario," says Young, 66. "A group called the Thorns did a version of 'Oh Susannah' that just knocked me on my ass." Recording and writing Young recorded the album between July and September 2002 at his Broken Arrow Ranch. The sessions were produced by Young and filmmaker L.A. Johnson. Broken Arrow (album)
''Broken Arrow'' is the 24th studio album by Canadian-American musician Neil Young, and his 8th with Crazy Horse, released in 1996. Background and recording The sessions for the album were held at Young's ranch in Northern California in the spring of 1996. The sessions were Young's first without producer David Briggs, who had died of lung cancer the previous year. The group struggled to record a new album without the guidance and leadership of Briggs. For inspiration, they booked a series of gigs at local clubs prior to the sessions. The final track is a live version of a Jimmy Reed song that was recorded on an audience microphone at one such small "secret" gig in California, giving it a bootleg feel. The first three songs are in the form of long, structured jams. In ''Shakey'', Young describes the album as "vulnerable and unfinished. I wanted to get one under my belt without David." Songs "Changing Highways" dates from 1974, and was first recorded by the group that year at Chess ...
