''Spencer Tracy'' is the self-titled debut album by Spencer Tracy, released 11 August 2003. The album was recorded at Revolver Studio with producer Ben Glatzer (Ammonia, The Sleepy Jackson, Cartman). The album debuted at #9 on the Australian Independent Record Labels Association (AIR) top 20 album charts in September 2003. It was selected as Triple J's "album of the week" (8 August to 15 August 2003). Richard Kingsmill wrote in The Music Network: "I championed Spencer Tracy a little bit around here because I was so surprised by it. I underestimated the band and didn’t think they could come up with a whole album of good guitar pop but they did. I thought it was a good strong positive record. It wasn’t just three singles and then really average material. I thought I can’t really fault this, there’s at least six or seven songs that are going to sound great on the radio." Spencer Tracy (band)
Spencer Tracy were an Australian rock band formed in 1999 in Collie, Western Australia. Founding mainstay members are Lee Jones on lead vocals and guitar, his brother Kim Jones on bass guitar and Shaun Sibbes on drums. They were joined by Jessica Bennett (ex-Lash) on co-lead vocals and guitar in 2002. After she left in the following year, John Rabjones joined on guitar to record the group's self-titled, debut album. They issued three extended plays, ''Corner of My Eye'' (March 2001), ''Daisy Daze'' (October) and ''Hold On'' (July 2003). Ben-Zion "Ben" Glatzer (born 8 October 1959, Perth, Western Australia, Perth) is an Australian Audio engineering, sound engineer and record producer, producer. He worked on Ammonia (band), Ammonia's debut album, ''Mint 400 (album), Mint 400'' (1995), The Chevelles' ''At Second Glance'' (1995), Cartman (band), Cartman's debut ''Go! (Cartman album), Go!'' Disco King
"Disco King" is the debut single by Australian rock group Spencer Tracy, released on Embryo Records in January 2003. "Disco King" earned a lot of airplay for Spencer Tracy, with the Triple M network adding "Disco King" to official rotation in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, NOVA Sydney & Melbourne running the track in the high rotation Buzz bin for two consecutive weeks and NOVA 937 in Perth giving solid airplay over a six-week period. The video clip to "Disco King" also received rotation on Channel V, MTV and Rage. The song created interest in the band from Interscope Records in the US. Triple J (stylised in all lowercase) is a government-funded, national Australian radio station intended to appeal to listeners of alternative music, which began broadcasting in January 1975. The station also places a greater emphasis on broadcasting Australian content compared to commercial stations. Triple J is a division of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. Ammonia (band)
Ammonia was an alternative rock band from Australia which made a name for itself in the 1990s, producing a mixture of grunge and guitar pop (a sound they described as "pop-metal"). The group began in 1992, initially comprising guitarist Dave Johnstone (ex-Hideous Goldsteins), drummer Alan Balmont (ex-Dear Octopus, Cherrytones) and bass guitar player Phil Natt. This line-up performed under the name Fuzzswirl and, following the departure of Natt, they continued to perform with a variety of bass guitar players around their hometown of Perth. In 1993, when the bass guitarist Simon Hensworth joined the group, the name was changed to Ammonia. The Sleepy Jackson
The Sleepy Jackson are an Australian alternative rock band formed in Perth, Western Australia. The band's name was inspired by a former drummer who was narcoleptic. The band revolves around the distinctive vocal style of multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Luke Steele. Stemming from a musical family, Luke's father Rick Steele is a local blues musician, and two of Luke's siblings are also musicians, with brother Jesse a former member of The Sleepy Jackson (and currently performing with father Rick in The Hot Biscuit Band), and sister Katy, who fronts another Perth rock band, Little Birdy. Cartman was a four-piece indie rock band from Perth, Western Australia. History 1997-2001: Early years The band was formed in 1997 in an attempt to enter a songwriting competition by Joe Hawkins, "I had sent in a tape of some songs recorded at home on the four-track, Only trouble was that (to play the songs live) I needed to get a bass player and someone who could sing harmonies" and so called on Cain Turnley, a trusted friend and a more than competent guitarist, "I had two weeks to rehearse the tunes and Id never picked up a bass before." Performing under the name Mr. Pink, they were knocked out of the contest in the first round but continued to play together for the next four months. Richard Kingsmill
Richard Kingsmill (born 29 January 1954) is an Australian radio announcer, music journalist and currently Group Music Director of triple j, triple j Unearthed, Double J and ABC Local Radio. Career His career at triple j started in 1988 as a producer for station presenters George Wayne, Tracee Hutchison and Tim Ritchie. In 1990, new management at the station forced Kingsmill and many others to re-apply for their jobs. Kingsmill failed to regain his producer position, but landed a presenter position instead. Since then, he has hosted shows that involve an in-depth knowledge of the current state of the alternative music scene, at both a local and international level. These shows have included ''The J-Files'' (1995–2003) and the ''Australian Music Show'' (1993–2003). In 1994, he began hosting triple j's ''New Releases'' show.
