AIR Charts
The Australian Independent Record Labels Association (commonly known as AIR), formerly Association of Independent Record Labels, is a non-profit trade association which supports the growth and development of Australia's independent recording industry. It represents Australian-owned record labels and independent artists based in Australia who function without the backing of major record labels. AIR was founded in 1996 in Sydney and is now located in Melbourne. In 2000, it founded the Independent Music Charts, also known as AIR Charts, which track the sales of Australia's highest-selling independent artists on a weekly and monthly basis, and since 2006 the annual Independent Music Awards, or AIR Awards, have been run to celebrate the year's highest-charting independently released Australian singles and albums. Ivy League Records was an Australian record label based in Sydney. It was founded in 1997 by Pete Lusty, Andy Cassell and Andy Kelly. In 2024, the label was merged into Mushroom Music. In the past, the label released music from the likes of The Vines, Red Riders, Bridezilla, Wild Billy Childish and the Buff Medways, The Silents, 78 Saab, The City Lights, The Whigs, Snob Scrilla and Neon and The John Reed Club. MGM Distribution
MGM Distribution (Metropolitan Groove Merchants) is the largest independent distributor of Australian music and music related merchandise. It was established in April 1998 by Sebastian Chase. MGM Distribution was set up specifically as a distribution hub to service independent labels and artists. MGM Distribution is focused on a specific agenda – dealing with retail, promoting its releases to retail, ensuring that orders are filled correctly and dispatched expediently. MGM is not a label and does not sign artists. As a distributor, MGM requires that the labels market their releases to the media to create demand that causes sell through at retail. Elefant Traks was a record label based in Sydney, Australia, founded by Kenny Sabir (p.k.a.Traksewt) in 1998. The label predominantly released Australian hip hop music, and founded its own hip-hop collective, The Herd, as well as managing acts like Horrorshow and Hermitude. Shock Records was an Australian independent record label, branded with the logo Shock or Shock Australia. Founded in 1988, it traded as Shock Records Pty.
