Southwell Racecourse
Southwell Racecourse ( , ) is a thoroughbred horse racing venue located east of Southwell in Nottinghamshire, England. It is one of only six racecourses in the UK to have an all-weather track and is one of three courses in the UK with a Tapeta surface. Southwell previously used a track surface of Fibresand, a mixture of sand and wispy fibres before changing to Tapeta (a mixture of sand, wax and fibre) in 2021. National Hunt racing on a turf course also takes place at Southwell. In 2007, the Great Yorkshire Chase (now Skybet Chase) was held at Southwell, while Doncaster Racecourse was closed for redevelopment. Southwell racecourse will always be associated with female jockey Hayley Turner, who grew up locally and had her first job in racing with a trainer based adjacent to the track. Southwell ( , ) is a minster (church), minster and market town, and a civil parish, in the district of Newark and Sherwood in Nottinghamshire, England. It is home to the Listed building, grade-I listed Southwell Minster, the cathedral of the Anglican Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham. The population of the town was recorded at 7,491 in the 2021 United Kingdom census, 2021 census. History Etymology The origin of the name is unclear. Doncaster Racecourse (also known as the Town Moor course) is a racecourse in Doncaster, South Yorkshire, England. It hosts two of Great Britain's List of British flat horse races#Group 1, 36 annual Group One, Group 1 flat races, the St Leger Stakes and the Racing Post Trophy. Winter Derby
The Winter Derby is a Group 3 flat horse race in Great Britain open to horses aged four years or older. It is run over a distance of 1 mile 3 furlongs and 23 yards () at Southwell in February or March. History The event was established in 1998 at Lingfield Park, and the inaugural edition was won by Running Stag. It was given Listed status in 1999, and promoted to Group 3 level in 2006. The original race distance was 1 mile 2 furlongs. The Winter Derby is run on a Tapeta surface. Hayley Turner
Hayley Turner (born 3 January 1983) is a retired England, English jockey who competed in flat racing. Originally from Nottingham, she was based in Newmarket, Suffolk, Newmarket for much of her career. In 2008 Turner became the first woman to ride 100 UK flat race winners during a calendar year. She went on to win eight Group races, including two Group One, Group 1 races and a Grade 1 race. She retired from racing in 2015 and became a regular contributor to ITV Racing. She came out of retirement in 2018 and since then has ridden four winners at Ascot Racecourse#Royal_Ascot, Royal Ascot. She rode her 1,000th winner in Great Britain in July 2024. The Great Yorkshire Chase is a Premier Handicap National Hunt handicap chase in England which is open to horses aged five years or older. It is run at Doncaster over a distance of 3 miles (4,828 metres), and it is scheduled to take place each year in January. The race was first run in 1948. Until 2023 it was sponsored by Sky Bet and known as the Sky Bet Handicap Chase. The race held Listed status until 2022 and was re-classified as a Premier Handicap from the 2023 running when Listed status was removed from handicap races.
