Southern Jaguars Football
The Southern Jaguars are the college football team representing the Southern University. The Jaguars play in NCAA Division I Football Championship as a member of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). The Jaguars started collegiate football in 1916, and played in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference before joining the SWAC in 1934. Every year, they play their last regular season game against Grambling in the Bayou Classic in New Orleans, Louisiana, in late November. Another rivalry, dubbed the " Boombox Classic," is played between Jackson State and Southern yearly. Eric Dooley
Eric Dooley (born July 14, 1965) is an American football coach and former player. He is the head football coach at Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, a position he has held since the 2022 season. Dooley served as the head football coach at Prairie View A&M University in Prairie View, Texas from 2018 to 2021. Ace W
An ace is a playing card, die or domino with a single pip. In the standard French deck, an ace has a single suit symbol (a heart, diamond, spade, or club) located in the middle of the card, sometimes large and decorated, especially in the case of the ace of spades. This embellishment on the ace of spades started when King James VI of Scotland and I of England required an insignia of the printing house to be printed on the ace of spades. This insignia was necessary for identifying the printing house and stamping it as having paid the new stamp tax. Although this requirement was abolished in 1960, the tradition has been kept by many card makers. 2013 Southern Jaguars Football Team
The 2013 Southern Jaguars football team represented Southern University in the 2013 NCAA Division I FCS football season. The Jaguars were led by first year head coach Dawson Odums, who was made the new head coach he served serving as interim head coach for the final nine games of the previous season. The Jaguars played their home games at Ace W. Mumford Stadium and were a member of the West Division of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). The Jaguars finished the season with a record, as West Division Champions and with a victory over Jackson State in the SWAC Championship Game. Charles Bates (American Football)
Charles Bates is a former American football coach. He was the 15th head football coach at Kentucky State University in Frankfort, Kentucky, serving for two seasons, from 1968 to 1969, and compiling a record of 2–15. In 1972, Bates succeeded Alva Tabor as Southern University's 10th head football coach. After a tumultuous 2–7–1 start to his career at Southern, Bates and the Jaguars posted two eight-win seasons (1974, 1976) and a nine win-season in 1975 in which Southern captured a share of the Southwestern Athletic Conference SWAC title and won the Pelican Bowl over South Carolina State. After a rough 3–3–1 start to the 1977 season, Bates stepped down mid-season, and Ken Tillage took over coaching duties for the rest of the season. In their 12th season under head coach Ace Mumford, the Jaguars compiled a 10–2 record, won the SWAC championship, shut out eight of 12 opponents, defeated in the Creole Classic and Fort Valley State in the Yam Bowl, and outscored all opponents by a total of 380 to 53. Pete Richardson
Pete Richardson (born October 17, 1946) is a former American football defensive back in the National Football League (NFL) and former college head coach. Richardson played college football at University of Dayton, and was drafted by the Buffalo Bills in the sixth round of the 1968 NFL Draft. He played for the Bills for three years until a knee injury ended his playing career. Richardson began his coaching career in the late 1970s at the high school football ranks in Dayton, Ohio, before moving up to NCAA Division II football in 1979 as he joined the coaching staff at Winston-Salem State University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Ace Mumford
Arnett William "Ace" Mumford (November 26, 1898 – April 28, 1962) was an American football coach. He served as the head football coach at historically black colleges and universities in Texas and Louisiana from 1924 to 1961, compiling a career college football record of 233–85–23. His head coaching positions were at Jarvis Christian College (1924–1926), Bishop College (1927–1929), Texas College (1931–1935), and Southern University (1936–1961). He has been inducted into at least eight halls of fame for his coaching accomplishments. A boombox is a transistorized portable music player featuring one or two cassette tape recorder/players and AM/FM radio, generally with a carrying handle. Beginning in the mid 1980s, a CD player was often included. Sound is delivered through an amplifier and two or more integrated loudspeakers. Bayou Classic
The Bayou Classic is an annual college football classic rivalry game between the Grambling State University Tigers and the Southern University Jaguars, first held under that name in 1974 at Tulane Stadium in New Orleans, although the series itself actually began in 1932. A trophy is awarded to the winning school. Background Since 1990 the game has been held the Saturday after Thanksgiving Day, at the Caesars Superdome. Following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, organizers moved the 2005 event from the Superdome to Reliant Stadium in Houston, Texas, where many of New Orleans' evacuees were living.
