Sori Choi
Sori Choi () is a Korean traditional percussionist known for performing traditional Korean musical styles and contemporary art music by modern composers. Choi was born in Seoul, South Korea. She began studying ''janggu'' at age 6. Choi studied traditional Korean percussion instruments at the National High School of Korean Music and at the Music College of Seoul National University. She is a student of two Important Intangible Cultural Properties of Korea master percussionists, studying ''janggu'' with Kim Yeong-taek and '' soribuk'' (barrel drum ''buk'' used in '' pansori'') with Park Geun-young. In 2010, Choi began touring internationally with the Korean Music Project (KMP), sponsored by South Korea's Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. Darmstädter Ferienkurse ("Darmstadt Summer Course") is a regular summer event of contemporary classical music in Darmstadt, Hesse, Germany. Pansori
''Pansori'' () is a Korean genre of musical storytelling performed by a singing, singer and a Pansori gosu, drummer. The term ''pansori'' is derived from the Korean words ''pan'' (Hangul: 판) and ''sori'' (Hangul: 소리), the latter of which means "sound." However, ''pan'' has multiple meanings, and scholars disagree on which was the intended meaning when the term was coined. One meaning is "a situation where many people are gathered." Another meaning is "a song composed of varying tones." In music, Gugwangdae describes a long story that takes as little as three hours and as much as eight hours or more. Buk (drum)
The ''buk'' () is a traditional Korean drum. While the term ''buk'' is a native Korean word used as a generic term meaning "drum" (the Sino-Korean word being ''go''), it is most often used to refer to a shallow barrel-shaped drum, with a round wooden body that is covered on both ends with animal skin. Buk are categorized as ''hyeokbu'' (혁부, ) which are instruments made with leather, and has been used for ''jeongak'' (Korean court music) and folk music.
