Solange Urdang
Solange Urdang is a British activist, co-founder of the Black British Theatre Awards (BBTA) and CEO of the Urdang Academy (from 2001 until 2022), founded by her late mother Leonie. Personal life Urdang is the daughter of Leonie Urdang, founder of the Urdang Academy in London in 1970. Leonie was originally from Cape Town in South Africa and fled the country in the 1960s because of the consequences of apartheid. Urdang herself studied at the academy (Lower and Upper Schools) and at the High School of Performing Arts in New York. On 4 May 2024 she was invested as an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE), recognising her career dedicated to uplifting marginalised communities through the creative arts. Black British Theatre Awards
The Black British Theatre Awards (BBTAs) have been presented annually since 2019 to recognise excellence among Black performers, creatives and productions in the UK. History The BBTAs were established in 2019 and first awarded in October of that year, to coincide with Black History Month. They were created by Solange Urdang and Omar F. Okai. The Awards celebrate black artists and creatives who have contributed to British theatre beginning with the 1950s, highlighting a lack of recognition towards Black talent and with the hope that the prize will improve their visibility and recognition. Lucy St Louis, the BBTAs Best Female Actor in a Musical in 2021, was the first Black female actress to play Christine Daaé in the London production of ''The Phantom of the Opera''. Urdang Academy
Urdang, previously known as The Urdang Academy, is a performing arts academy based in Islington, London. The school was founded as a ballet school under the direction of Leonie Urdang; after her death her daughter and CEO Solange Urdang succeeded her in 2001, reinventing the school as a performing arts college and remaining director until 2022. In April 2022, Urdang was acquired by City, University of London. Urdang provides specialist vocational training in dance and musical theatre at further and higher education level. The academy is accredited by the Council for Dance Education and Training and offers Qualifications and Curriculum Authority-recognised qualifications validated by University of Birmingham, Anglia Ruskin University and Trinity College, London. It was rated "Outstanding" by Ofsted in 2011 and again in 2015 as well as being named one of the best places to study degree level musical theatre by ''The Stage'' in 2015. High School Of Performing Arts
The High School of Performing Arts (informally known as "PA") was a public alternative high school established in 1947 and located at 120 West 46th Street in the borough of Manhattan, New York City, from 1948 to 1984. In 1961, the school was merged with another alternative arts school, the High School of Music & Art, while each retained its own campus. Plans for establishing a joint building for the merged schools took many years to be realized. There was opposition to the loss of PA's individual identity, but both student bodies eventually moved into a shared building in 1984, and renamed the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts.
