Soccer Dreams
''Soccer Dreams'', a.k.a. ''Football Dreams'', is a Canadian reality television programme that gives footballers ages 14–19 in North America the opportunity to win a contract with the Everton Football Club. Based on the UK show ''Football Icon'', ''Soccer Dreams'' tryouts began on June 29, 2007, in Toronto. Tryouts were also held in Montreal, Vancouver, Calgary and Winnipeg. At each trial, a team of coaching staff, including Everton Football Club Academy Manager Ray Hall, whittled the trialists down to 36 competitors. On August 20, the final 36 reported back to Ottawa, where they played for the contract at the Oz Dome. The show was produced by, amongst others, action film producer Jalal Merhi. ''Football Icon'' is a British television programme shown on Sky One. The programme gives young, unsigned football players between the ages of 16 and 18 a chance to win a contract with the then Premiership champions, Chelsea. Thousands of players who entered were whittled down to fourteen finalists, all of whom were put to the test at their Cobham training ground. The players were eliminated week by week until only the final three remained, when then-manager José Mourinho and his staff selected a winner. Series 1 The first series began in October 2005, and 5,000 young footballers across the UK took part. The series was won by Boorarse from Brain Ree. In 2nd place was Jason Syrett. After five seasons in the youth team at Stamford Bridge, Hurrell left the Blues in the close season of 2011. Jalal Merhi
Jalal Merhi is a Brazilian-born Lebanese-Canadian martial artist, actor and filmmaker. As a competitor, he was a regular on the tournament scene in the late 1970s to mid 1980s. As a film and television producer, he owns the Film One company, and previously owned a studio located at the Donlands Theatre in Toronto. Early life Merhi was born in Brazil to a family of Druze Lebanese expatriates working in the jewelry industry. He moved to Lebanon at age six, before moving again to Canada at age nineteen to study and to escape the Civil War. He initially spent time between Montreal and Toronto before permanently settling in the latter. In Canada, Merhi studied film and business. He is an alumn of Ryerson University and George Brown College, where he was discouraged to pursue a film career by one of his professors. Fox Soccer (formerly Fox Soccer Channel & Fox Sports World before that) was an American television specialty channel specializing in soccer, owned by 21st Century Fox, which operated from 1997 to 2013. It formerly broadcast rugby and Australian rules football, but in its final years it was devoted strictly to soccer. Due to Fox consolidating its cable sports rights on the new general-interest channels Fox Sports 1 and Fox Sports 2, and following the loss of United States television rights to broadcast Premier League soccer events to NBC, Fox Soccer was replaced on September 2, 2013, by FXX, an entertainment sister network to FX.
