The Slovak Green Party (, SZS), founded in 2006 was an environmentalist political party in Slovakia without parliamentary representation. It is not a member of the European Green Party. History Until January 2006 the Slovak member of the European Green Party, had officially the name of ''Strana zelených na Slovensku'' (Green Party in Slovakia, SZS), before becoming ''Strana zelených'' (Green Party, SZ). On 21 August 2006 a splinter group registered officially as ''Strana zelenej alternatívy'' (Green Party Alternatives, SZA), then changed its name on 26 September 2006 to the present ''Strana zelených Slovenska''. It took part in the local elections in December 2006 in a coalition with the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union – Democratic Party and gained two seats in the municipal council in Senica. The Green Party (, SZ), between October 1991 and January 2006 called the Green Party in Slovakia (), was an environmentalist political party in Slovakia without parliamentary representation. History The Green Party was founded on 9 December 1989 as a Czechoslovakia-wide party, and was the second green party in post-communist countries. It was registered on 3 February 1990 and three branches were set up – Bohemian, Moravian-Silesian and Slovak. The first congress of the Slovak branch was held in February 1990 in Banská Bystrica, with Juraj Mesík elected as chairman. In the 1990 Slovak elections the party received 3.1% of the vote, winning six of the 150 seats in the National Council. The combined party failed to win any seats in the nationwide elections. Senica
Senica (; ; ) is a town in Trnava Region, western Slovakia. It is located in the north-eastern part of the Záhorie lowland, close to the Little Carpathians. Etymology The name is derived from the word ''seno'' ' hay' with the suffix ''-ica'' used to form a place name. History Senica's history is closely related with Branč Castle, built in 1251–1261. It was first mentioned in 1256 and received its city privileges in 1396, confirmed in 1463 and 1492. The city was affected by Turkish wars, anti-Habsburg uprisings and reformation and counter-reformations in the 17th century. In 1746, it became the seat of a district within Nyitra County. Slovak Democratic And Christian Union – Democratic Party
The Slovak Democratic and Christian Union – Democratic Party (, SDKÚ-DS) is a liberal-conservative, Christian-democratic political party in Slovakia. The SDKÚ-DS was a member of the Centrist Democrat International and was a member of the European People's Party until 2018, when it was expelled due to inactivity. For 10 years, SDKÚ was a major centre-right political force in Slovakia. During their rule, Slovakia became member of the European Union and NATO, as well as put through economic reforms leading to the 00's economic boom. The party lost its significance in the 2012 parliamentary election, when it received only 6% of the popular vote. 2016 Slovak Parliamentary Election
Parliamentary elections were held in Slovakia on 5 March 2016 to elect the 150 members of the National Council. The ruling left-wing populist Direction – Social Democracy (Smer) party remained the strongest party, but lost its majority. The Slovak Democratic and Christian Union – Democratic Party (SDKÚ–DS), which led the government between 2000–06 and 2010–12, was defeated heavily, failing to cross the electoral threshold and losing its representation in the National Council.
