"Slice" is the title track and the second single from Five for Fighting's 2009 album of the Slice (album), same name. The song is a nostalgic tribute to Don McLean's "American Pie (song), American Pie", featuring a reference to "Chevrolet, Chevys and levees" in the first verse and the line "We were more than just a slice of American pie" in the chorus. Vladimir John Ondrasik III (born January 7, 1965), also known by his stage name Five for Fighting, is an American singer-songwriter and pianist. He is best known for his piano-based soft rock ballads, such as the top 40 hits " Superman (It's Not Easy)" (2001), "100 Years" (2003) " The Riddle" (2006). He also had a string of moderate hits on the adult contemporary charts in the late 2000s and into the 2010s, including "World" (2006) and "Chances" (2009). Ondrasik has recorded six studio albums, one EP, and several live albums as Five for Fighting. Ondrasik's song "Superman" was nominated for a Grammy in 2002. In May 2009, Ondrasik posted on his Myspace blog that the name of his forthcoming record will be taken from fan suggestions, and will be subsequently voted on to determine the winning album title. Alternative rock (also known as alternative music, alt-rock or simply alternative) is a category of rock music that evolved from the independent music underground of the 1970s.
