Skates are Chondrichthyes, cartilaginous fish belonging to the family (biology), family Rajidae in the superorder Batoidea of Ray (fish), rays. More than 150 species have been described, in 17 genera. Arhynchobatidae, Softnose skates and Gurgesiellidae, pygmy skates were previously treated as subfamilies of Rajidae (Arhynchobatinae and Gurgesiellinae), but are now considered as distinct families. Alternatively, the name "skate" is used to refer to the entire order of Rajiformes (families Anacanthobatidae, Arhynchobatidae, Gurgesiellidae and Rajidae). Members of Rajidae are distinguished by a stiff snout and a rostrum (anatomy), rostrum that is not reduced. ''Skate'' (stylized as ''skate.'') is a 2007 skateboarding video game developed by EA Black Box and published by Electronic Arts for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and mobile phones. Two sequels, '' Skate 2'' and '' Skate 3'', were released for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, as well as '' Skate It'', a spin-off for Wii, Nintendo DS and iOS platforms. It received positive reviews from critics. Development The game's "flick it" control system began development long before any graphics had been implemented: the initial prototype simply read unique analog stick motions and displayed a basic text message saying what trick had been performed, along with speed and accuracy ratings. The developers found that in order to receive accurate information from the very fast analog stick motions used when playing the game, input data from each control pad had to be read at a rate of 120 Hz. SK8 (pronounced "skate") was a multimedia authoring environment developed in Apple's Advanced Technology Group from 1988 until 1997. It was described as "HyperCard on steroids", combining a version of HyperCard's HyperTalk programming language with a modern object-oriented application platform. The project's goal was to allow creative designers to create complex, stand-alone applications. The main components of SK8 included the object system, the programming language, the graphics and components libraries, and the Project Builder, an integrated development environment.
