Sint-Michielsgestel
Sint-Michielsgestel () is a village in the municipality of Sint-Michielsgestel (municipality), Sint-Michielsgestel, Netherlands. Geography The 120 km long river Dommel flows north from a well near Peer, Belgium, Peer in Belgium. Just north of 's-Hertogenbosch it is joined by the Aa (Meuse), Aa and joins the Meuse as Dieze. It currently divides Sint-Michielsgestel in two parts. In the past the Dommel was important as a transport axis and had crucial influence on the village's history. History Antiquity Archeological finds near the hamlet of Halder prove that the hamlet Halder, Netherlands, Halder was probably the most important settlement on the Dommel during the Roman era. Thousands of Roman coins were found in 1962 not far from Nieuw Herlaer castle. These and other local archeological finds are now on display in the Museum Romeins Halder at Haanwijk. Oud Herlaer
Oud Herlaer was a castle on the Dommel just east of Vught. All that remains is a farm which incorporates parts of the old castle. While not that much remains of the castle, there are a lot of recent studies about Oud Herlaer and its owners. The farm is planned to be opened as an art center in 2021. The name Oud Herlaer, ( means 'old'), signifies that later on Nieuw-Herlaer Castle was built about 1 kilometer upstream. Location Oud Herlaer is on the right bank of the Dommel. In medieval times it was in a very strategic position. The Dommel and its tributaries were practically the only way to efficiently transport bulky goods from north to south. On the other hand, the Dommel was an obstacle to east–west transport, except where there were bridges. The barrier function of the Dommel is illustrated by Oud Herlaer being within one kilometre of Maurick Castle in Vught, and actually being much closer to that place, but still belonging to the municipality of Sint-Michielsgestel. Halder, Netherlands
Halder is a hamlet in the Dutch province of North Brabant. It is located in the municipality of Sint-Michielsgestel, between the towns of Sint-Michielsgestel and Vught Vught () is a municipality and a town in the Province of North Brabant in the southern Netherlands, and lies just south of the industrial and administrative centre of 's-Hertogenbosch. Many commuters live there, and in 2004 the town was named "Best ....''ANWB Topografische Atlas Nederland'', Topografische Dienst and ANWB, 2005. The hamlet was first mentioned in 1087 as Herlar, and is a combination of "forest meadow" and "army". It takes its name from the castle. Halder has place name signs. Nieuw-Herlaer Castle
Nieuw-Herlaer Castle is a manor in Sint-Michielsgestel, the Netherlands. It contains a tower which was part of the preceding castle. Location Nieuw-Herlaar Castle is on the east bank of the Dommel, about a hundred meters from the hamlet Halder, to which it is connected by a bridge. Nieuw-Herlaer Castle was a loan from the Lordship Herlaer, which centered on Oud Herlaer Castle. Oud Herlaer Castle is only about one kilometer to the north and is very close to Maurick Castle in Vught. Haanwijk manor is only 400 meters to the north. Haanwijk Manor is not a true castle, but it has the medieval tower 't Vaantje on the estate grounds. The castle density in the area seems remarkable. In the past the proximity between Nieuw-Herlaar Castle and Oud Herlaer Castle was more logical than it now seems to be. Dommel
The Dommel is a small river in Belgium and the Netherlands, left tributary of the Dieze. It is 120 km long, of which 85 km are in the Netherlands. The Dommel takes in water from the Keersop, Tongelreep, Run (stream), Run, Gender (stream), Gender and Kleine Dommel streams and merges at 's-Hertogenbosch with the Aa (Meuse), Aa stream to form the river Dieze, which subsequently flows towards the Meuse. Gymnasium Beekvliet is a Catholic independent school with gymnasium status in Sint-Michielsgestel, The Netherlands. 784 students attended it in the school year of 2019–2020. History Today's "Gymnasium Beekvliet" originated from the episcopal seminary and boarding school Beekvliet. "Kleinseminarie Beekvliet" was founded in Sint-Michielsgestel in 1815. Haanwijk
Haanwijk is an Estate (land), estate and nature reserve with a manor house near Sint-Michielsgestel in North-Brabant, Netherlands. Nature Reserve The Haanwijk nature reserve that is now owned by Brabants Landschap measures 431 hectares. It is situated near the confluence of the Dommel and the Esschestroom. Haanwijk is connected to the nature reserves Sterrenbos, Pettelaar and Dooibroek. The Sterrenbos of 80 hectares is home to the European badger and the Lily of the valley. Pieter Geyl
Pieter Catharinus Arie Geyl (15 December 1887, Dordrecht – 31 December 1966, Utrecht) was a Dutch historian, well known for his studies in early modern Dutch history and in historiography. Background Geyl was born in Dordrecht and graduated from the University of Leiden in 1913. His thesis was on Christofforo Suriano, the Venetian Ambassador in the Netherlands from 1616 to 1623. He was married twice, first to Maria Cornelia van Slooten in 1911 (who died in 1933) and secondly to Garberlina Kremer in 1934. Early career Geyl worked as a teacher at Stedelijk Gymnasium Schiedam (grammar school) in Schiedam (1912–1913) before going on to serve as the London correspondent for '' Nieuwe Rotterdamsche Courant'' newspaper. Simon Vestdijk
Simon Vestdijk (; 17 October 1898 – 23 March 1971) was a Dutch writer. He was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature fifteen times. Life Born in the small Frisian town of Harlingen, Vestdijk studied medicine in Amsterdam, but turned to literature after a few years as a doctor, including some time on board a ship. From 1932, he lived from literature. He became one of the most important 20th-century writers in the Netherlands. During the German occupation, he and other Dutch intellectuals were held hostage in Kamp Sint-Michielsgestel for some time, partly because they did not want to join the Chamber of Culture. After the war, he retired to Doorn ( Utrecht province). Vestdijk struggled with severe depressions from his youth, and until the end of his life. Willem "Wim" Schermerhorn (; 17 December 1894 – 10 March 1977) was a Dutch politician who served as Prime Minister of the Netherlands from 25 June 1945 until 3 July 1946.
