Silver Lion
The Silver Lion (, also known as Silver Lion for Best Direction) is an annual award presented for best directing achievements in a feature film in the official competition section of the Venice Film Festival since 1998. The prize has been awarded irregularly and has gone through several changes of purpose. Between 1953 and 1994, the award was given infrequently to a number of films as second prize for those nominated for the Golden Lion. At various times, the Silver Lion has also been awarded for Silver Lion#Defunct Categories, debut films, short films, direction, and writing. Since 47th Venice International Film Festival, 1990, the Silver Lion has been presented to the director of a feature film in the official competition; Martin Scorsese was the first official winner of the award for ''Goodfellas'', while Brady Corbet is the most recent winner for The Brutalist, ''The Brutalist'' in 81st Venice International Film Festival, 2024. Brady James Monson Corbet ( ; born August 17, 1988) is an American filmmaker and former actor. He had roles in films such as ''Thirteen (2003 film), Thirteen'' (2003), ''Mysterious Skin'' (2004), ''Funny Games (2007 film), Funny Games'' (2007), ''Martha Marcy May Marlene'' (2011), ''Melancholia (2011 film), Melancholia'' (2011), and ''Clouds of Sils Maria'' (2014), as well as the series ''24 (TV series), 24'' (2006) and ''Olive Kitteridge (miniseries), Olive Kitteridge'' (2014). Black Cat, White Cat
''Black Cat, White Cat'' () is a 1998 Serbian romantic black comedy film directed by Emir Kusturica. It won the Silver Lion for Best Direction at the Venice Film Festival. The literal translation of the title is actually "Black pussycat, white tomcat". The movie characters speak in Romani, Serbian, and Bulgarian frequently switching among them. Plot Matko Destanov, a small-time Romani smuggler and profiteer, lives with his teenage son Zare in a ramshackle house by the Danube River in eastern Serbia near the Bulgarian border. He has plans to steal a whole train of smuggled fuel. 62nd Venice International Film Festival
The 62nd annual Venice International Film Festival, was held from 31 August 2005 to 10 September 2005, at Venice Lido in Italy. Italian production and costume designer Dante Ferretti was the jury president for the main competition. Spanish actress Inés Sastre hosted the opening and closing nights of the festival. The Golden Lion was awarded to ''Brokeback Mountain'' by Ang Lee. Japanese filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki and Italian actress Stefania Sandrelli the recipients of the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement. ''3-Iron'' () is a 2004 romantic drama film written, produced and directed by Kim Ki-duk. An international co-production between South Korea and Japan, the film stars Jae Hee as a young drifter who develops a relationship with an abused housewife (Lee Seung-yeon). ''Oasis'' () is a 2002 South Korean psychological drama romance film directed by Lee Chang-dong. The film's plot tells about the difficult romance between a mildly mentally disabled man who has just been released from jail after a -year sentence for involuntary manslaughter and a woman with severe cerebral palsy. ''Secret Ballot'' () is an Iranian film from 2001. It was directed by Babak Payami. The film covers a day in the life of an agent collecting votes on an island in Iran. Plot summary The story begins at a small, two-man army post on a remote island. It is voting day, and an election agent is due to arrive by boat. A young woman arrives, collects the official voting box, and demands that the soldier on duty escort her around the island. They climb into a military jeep and begin driving around, looking for voters.
