Sigurd Wandel
Sigurd Wandel (22 February 1875 – 3 June 1947) was a Danish painter who became director of the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. Biography Wandel was born in the Frederiksberg district of Copenhagen, Denmark. He was the son of art collector Oscar Andreas Wandel (1845-1925) and painter Elisabeth Wandel (1850–1926). He was the nephew of naval officer and polar explorer Carl Frederick Wandel (1843–1930) . Royal Danish Academy Of Fine Arts
The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts ( da, Det Kongelige Danske Kunstakademi - Billedkunst Skolerne) has provided education in the arts for more than 250 years, playing its part in the development of the art of Denmark. History The Royal Danish Academy of Portraiture, Sculpture, and Architecture in Copenhagen was inaugurated on 31 March 1754, and given as a gift to the King Frederik V on his 31st birthday. Its name was changed to the Royal Danish Academy of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture in 1771. At the same event, Johann Friedrich Struensee introduced a new scheme in the academy to encourage artisan apprentices to take supplementary classes in drawing so as to develop the notion of "good taste". Frederiksberg
Frederiksberg () is a part of the Capital Region of Denmark. It is formally an independent municipality, Frederiksberg Municipality, separate from Copenhagen Municipality, but both are a part of the City of Copenhagen. It occupies an area of less than 9 km2 and had a population of 103,192 in 2015. Frederiksberg is an enclave surrounded by Copenhagen Municipality. Elisabeth Wandel
Elisabeth Christiane Alvina Wandel, née Møller (January 14, 1850 - December 28, 1926) was a Danish painter. She was known for her portraits and landscape paintings. Biography Møller was born in Copenhagen, Denmark. She was the daughter of Andreas Christian Møller and Thora Adelaide Beck. She was a student of Carl Thomsen and Peder Severin Krøyer. She married the art collector Oscar Andreas Wandel (1845-1925) and their home became a gathering place for artists. She was the mother of the painter Sigurd Wandel (1875–1947). Wandel exhibited at Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition in the years 1887-1900, 1902 and 1912-22, at the Nordic Exhibition of 1888 in Copenhagen, and the Exposition Universelle (1889) in Paris. She also exhibited her work at the Palace of Fine Arts and The Woman's Building at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Illinois. She died during 1926 in Copenhagen. Carl Frederick Wandel
Carl Frederik Wandel (15 August 1843 – 21 April 1930) was a Danish naval officer and polar explorer. He was largely involved in hydrographic work. Wandel became an officer of the Danish Navy in 1863, rising to the rank of captain in 1892, of Rear Admiral in 1899 and Vice Admiral in 1905. He retired from active service in 1911. Career In 1864 Wandel served in the schooner in the Baltic Sea and in 1865-67 he took part in a French expedition to Mexico. In 1876-78 he was put in charge of the mail ship to Iceland and in 1880 he participated in a US oceanographic survey expedition. In 1881-86 he was Head of the Marine Ministry Secretariat, 1886-88 head of maritime surveys in Danish waters and in 1889-98 director of the Chart-archive. In 1890 Wandel was appointed chairman of the commission for the survey of Danish waters and in 1895 chairman of the commission for geological and geographical studies in Greenland. Kristian Zahrtmann
Peder Henrik Kristian Zahrtmann, known as Kristian Zahrtmann, (31 March 1843 – 22 June 1917) was a Danish painter. He was a part of the Danish artistic generation in the late 19th century, along with Peder Severin Krøyer and Theodor Esbern Philipsen, who broke away from both the strictures of traditional Academicism and the heritage of the Golden Age of Danish Painting, in favor of naturalism and realism. He was known especially for his history paintings, and especially those depicting strong, tragic, legendary women in Danish history. He also produced works of many other genres including landscapes, street scenes, folk scenes and portraits. He had a far-reaching effect on the development of Danish art through his effective support of individual style among his students during the many years he taught.
