Shriekback
Shriekback are an English rock band formed in 1981 in Kentish Town by Barry Andrews, formerly of XTC and the League of Gentlemen (keyboards/synthesizers/vocals), and Dave Allen, formerly of Gang of Four (bass), with Carl Marsh, formerly of Out on Blue Six (guitars/vocals) soon added to the line-up. They were joined by Martyn Barker on drums in 1983. Their early music was a funk-influenced version of new wave and post-punk, later moving towards art rock and always featuring "insidiously weird vocals". Barry Andrews (musician)
Barry Andrews (born 12 September, 1956 in West Norwood, London) is an English songwriter, singer and keyboard player who is a co-founder of Shriekback and was formerly a member of XTC and League of Gentlemen. Early life Barry William Andrews was born in West Norwood, London, on 12 September, 1956, the only child of bricklayer William Andrews and Minnie, a housewife. Andrews attended Hitherfield Primary School in South-East London before moving with his family to Park North, Swindon, at the age of seven. He attended Park North Junior School, Richard Jefferies Secondary School and Park Senior High School, leaving full-time education in 1976. Career On leaving school, Andrews played keyboards in covers bands in Swindon and Exeter before joining XTC in 1978. ''Oil and Gold'' (1985) is the fourth full-length album by English musical group Shriekback, released on Arista Records in UK and Europe, Australia and New Zealand and on Island Records in the United States, The album is widely considered the band's highest creative moment and saw them begin a metamorphosis from funk-influenced New Wave towards darker and challenging art rock. The addition of Martyn Barker on drums and Lu Edmonds on guitar gives many of the songs a harder edge, while the album also features synthesizers from Hans Zimmer, best known for his work in film music. Care (Shriekback Album)
''Care'' is the first full-length Shriekback album (and their second studio album after ''Tench)'', released in 1983. The single "Lined Up" was a minor club hit and reached number 39 on the Australian ARIA charts. "Lined Up" was released twice in the UK (the second time as a remix), peaking at number 89 initially and number 78 for the remix. The album spent 3 weeks on the ''Billboard'' album chart, peaking at number 188. Critical reception ''Trouser Press'' called the album "an intelligent, well-produced, spirited debut, demonstrating what every XTC fan knew all along — arryAndrews is one of rock’s most original and musical keyboard players." Go Bang!
''Go Bang!'' is the sixth studio album by Shriekback, released in 1988. It produced a significant number of ''Billboard'' modern rock hits, including "Get Down Tonight," "Intoxication," and "Shark Walk". Released after the departure of founding member and bassist, Dave Allen, the album revolves around Barry Andrews. The band was under considerable pressure from Island Records to produce a hit from this album and British hitmaker Richard James Burgess was brought in to produce and mix the album. The album is significantly more commercial than the previous or subsequent albums and this caused some tension in the studio. However, it produced the necessary hits, including lead single "Intoxication", which peaked at #6 on the newly introduced Modern Rock Tracks chart. "Get Down Tonight", a cover of the KC and the Sunshine Band track, spent 6 weeks in the Billboard Dance/Club chart, peaking at #20. Jam Science
''Jam Science'' is the third studio album by English pop group Shriekback. It was released in two versions in 1984 and was reissued on CD in a two-disc special release from the band themselves in 2014, the second disc being a live show at Hatfield. The first edition, issued on Y Records in early 1984, was the final release by the label. Y Records
Y Records was a British independent record label set up in 1980 by Dick O'Dell in the United Kingdom, and distributed by Rough Trade. History Artists included the Slits, Shriekback and a number of groups that were associated with the Bristol indie band scene from the late 1970s: the Pop Group, Glaxo Babies, Maximum Joy and Pigbag. The label's first release in 1980 ("Where There's a Will There's a Way" / "In the Beginning There Was Rhythm") was a split single by the Pop Group and the Slits, bands which shared a drummer (Bruce Smith) as well as manager (Dick O'Dell). Pigbag's single, " Papa's Got a Brand New Pigbag") entered the UK Indie Chart in May 1981, and stayed there for 70 weeks in total, peaking at No. 1. Dave Allen (producer/bassist)
David Geoffrey Allen (born 23 December 1955, in Kendal, Cumbria) is an English musician, formerly the bass guitarist for the post-punk band Gang of Four. In 1981, he left Gang of Four to form Shriekback. He later founded World Domination Recordings and participated in two bands who recorded for the label. Allen was the vocalist and primary songwriter for The Elastic Purejoy, and played bass guitar in Low Pop Suicide which was fronted by Rick Boston. He appeared on several LPs and EPs with each of these bands, though his ambitious plan to release a work of 20 volumes produced only three releases, ''The Harvest'' and the Elastic Purejoy's ''The Clutter of Pop'' and ''Talk Radio''. After leaving Shriekback in 1988, Allen founded King Swamp with other former bandmates. Martyn Barker
Martyn Barker (born 14 September 1959, Merseyside, England) is an English drummer, percussionist, multi-instrumentalist, composer and producer, best known as the drummer for Shriekback. He has also been a member of King Swamp, and worked with Robert Plant, Marianne Faithfull, Sarah Jane Morris (singer), Sarah Jane Morris, Billy Bragg, Beth Gibbons, Paul Webb, Rustin Man, Alain Bashung and Juldeh Camara and Justin Adams. He currently has co-written and co-produced two records with songwriter, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Talitha Rise, as well as producing and drumming for acts worldwide. The track "Sacred Waters", which was taken from Barker's collaborative album with Emily Burridge was used as incidental music on ''Critical Role'' for the first episode of season 3. King Swamp
King Swamp was a British rock band, consisting of Walter Wray (vocals), Dave Allen (bass), Steve Halliwell (keyboards), Dominic Miller (guitar), and Martyn Barker (drums). The band was formed in 1988 in London, after Allen and Barker had parted ways with Shriekback and recruited Wray as frontman. Halliwell and Mike Cozzi (featured on the second album) were also ex-Shriekback members. King Swamp's self titled first album in 1989 had some success with the single, "Is This Love?" which reached number 21 on the ''Billboard'' Album Rock chart. The band released Wiseblood in 1990. Guitarist Dominic Miller was replaced by Nick Lashley and Mike Cozzi on the second album. Wiseblood failed to chart in the USA or the U.K. and was panned by critics and ultimately led to the band dissolving. Robert David "Lu" Edmonds (born 9 September 1957) is an English rock and folk musician. He is currently, as of 2018, a vocalist and saz and cümbüş player in the Mekons and the lead guitarist for Public Image Limited. Edmonds reportedly plays electric guitar, bass guitar, keyboards, bouzouki, saz, cümbüs, oud, and drums, among other instruments. Personal life Growing up abroad in Poland, South America, Russia and Cyprus, Edmonds was educated in local schools and at Ampleforth College. As of 2018, he resided in Ireland. Rock music Edmonds is currently, as of 2018, a vocalist and saz and cümbüş player in the Mekons, and also the lead guitarist for Public Image Limited.
