Showtime (Degrassi)
"Showtime" is a two-part episode of the second season of Canadian teen drama ''Degrassi High''. The tenth and eleventh episodes respectively, it aired on the CBC on 28 January and 4 February 1991. In the leadup to a talent show, Claude Tanner (David Armin-Parcells) commits suicide. Production The producers of ''Degrassi'' had previously contemplated addressing suicide, but feared that they would mishandle the subject and cause copycat suicides. The intent of the episode was to avoid glorifying suicide and instead focus on the ramifications it causes; David Armin-Parcells, who played Claude Tanner, the character who commits suicide, told the ''Montreal Gazette'' he felt the episode "portrays suicide as harsh, and keeps away from romanticizing death." ''Degrassi High'' is a Canadian teen drama television series and the third series in the ''Degrassi'' franchise created by Linda Schuyler and Kit Hood. A direct continuation of ''Degrassi Junior High'', it debuted on CBC in Canada on November 6, 1989 and ended on February 18, 1991, consisting of a total of 2 seasons and a total of 28 episodes. In the United States, it debuted on PBS on January 13, 1990. A non-union production by Hood and Schuyler's company Playing With Time, Inc. Kate Taylor of WGBH served as an additional executive producer. Stefan Brogren (born 21 April 1972) is a Canadian actor, director, and producer. He is best known as Archie "Snake" Simpson in the ''Degrassi'' franchise of television shows. Early life Stefan Brogren was born on 21 April 1972, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Brogren's father is of Swedish descent. Career Brogren has portrayed Archie "Snake" Simpson since his teen years, as a student in ''Degrassi Junior High'' and ''Degrassi High'' in the late 1980s and the early 1990s, and then as a media teacher and principal in '' Degrassi: The Next Generation'' (2001-2015). Kit Hood
Christopher Hood (24 March 1943 – 20 January 2020) was a Canadian television editor, director, writer and producer. He is best known as the director and co-creator of the ''Degrassi'' franchise alongside Linda Schuyler, including the series ''The Kids of Degrassi Street'', ''Degrassi Junior High'', and ''Degrassi High,'' the latter two of which established the franchise's popularity and longevity. Career Christopher "Kit" Hood was born in London England in 1943, the son of Robert Hood and Eve Jennings, a writer of children's books. Hood worked as a child actor, then as a film editor with Walt Disney Productions in London. In 1969, he emigrated to Canada. In Toronto, he was a freelance editor of television commercials when he met Linda Schuyler, a grade 8 teacher-turned-filmmaker who was looking for an editor with advanced technical skills. A copycat suicide is defined as an emulation of another suicide that the person attempting suicide knows about either from local knowledge or due to accounts or depictions of the original suicide on television and in other media.
