Shlomo Avineri (Hebrew: שלמה אבינרי; born Jerzy Wiener; 20 August 1933 – 30 November 2023) was an Israeli political scientist. He was a professor of Political Science at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and member of the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities. He also served as a recurring visiting professor at the Central European University in Budapest, and as a fellow at Munich-based academic think tank ''Centrum für angewandte Politikforschung,'' offering advice to politicians. Avineri died on 30 November 2023 at the age of 90. Ideas Avineri wrote extensively on the history of political philosophy, especially on the political thought of Karl Marx, Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, and on the early Zionist political theories of Moses Hess and Theodor Herzl. Shlomo Carlebach (musician)
Shlomo Carlebach (; January 14, 1925 – October 20, 1994), known as Reb Shlomo to his followers, was an American rabbi and musician nicknamed "the Singing Rabbi". Although his roots lay in traditional Orthodox yeshivot, he branched out to create his own style, combining Hasidic Judaism, warmth and personal interaction, public concerts, and song-filled synagogue services. At various times he lived in Manhattan, San Francisco, Toronto, and a '' moshav'' he founded, Mevo Modi'im, in Israel. Shlomo Breznitz (; born 3 August 1936) is an Israeli author, psychologist, former professor of psychology, former rector and president of the University of Haifa, and previous member of the Knesset. He is the founder and currently one of the members of the board of directors of CogniFit, a brain fitness software company. Early life Breznitz was born in Bratislava in Czechoslovakia (today Slovakia). During the Holocaust he and his sister were hidden in a Roman Catholic orphanage, an experience detailed in his memoirs, "Memory Fields". His father was killed in Auschwitz, but his mother survived and they made aliyah to Israel in 1949. Shlomo Bohbot (; born 8 November 1942) is an Israeli politician who was mayor of Ma'alot-Tarshiha from 1976 until 2018 and also served as a member of the Knesset for the Labor Party between 1992 and 1996. Biography Born in Morocco in 1942, Bohbot made aliyah to Israel in 1954 under the Youth Aliyah programme. Between 1963 and 1971 he worked in the social services department of Ma'alot-Tarshiha local council. He was elected to the municipal council in 1974, and became head of the municipal council in 1976, a post equivalent to mayor. Shlomo Bentin (; August 26, 1946 – July 13, 2012) was an Israeli neuropsychologist and recipient of the 2012 Israel Prize in psychology. Bentin was a professor of psychology and education, and a member of the Center for Neural Computation at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Biography Bentin was born in Bucharest, Romania in 1946. In 1958 Bentin immigrated to Israel and grew up in Kibbutz Gan Shmuel and later on attended the military command boarding school near the Hebrew Reali School in Haifa where he graduated in 1965. Later on Bentin served his mandatory military service in the Israeli Defense Forces in the Paratroopers Brigade. Shlomo Benizri (; born 7 February 1961) is an Israeli politician and member of the Shas party. He represented Shas in the Knesset between 1992 and 2008, serving as Deputy Health Minister, Minister of Health, and Labor and Social Welfare Minister during the late 1990s and early 2000s. He was later convicted for accepting bribes, breach of trust, conspiring to commit a crime, and obstruction of justice, and served a prison sentence. Biography Shlomo Benizri was born in Nesher. Irgun
The Irgun (), officially the National Military Organization in the Land of Israel, often abbreviated as Etzel or IZL (), was a Zionist paramilitary organization that operated in Mandatory Palestine between 1931 and 1948. Revisionist Zionism is a form of Zionism characterized by territorial maximalism. Revisionist Zionism promoted expansionism and the establishment of a Jewish majority on both sides of the Jordan River. Developed by Ze'ev Jabotinsky in the 1920s, this ideology advocated a "revision" of the " practical Zionism" of David Ben-Gurion and Chaim Weizmann which was focused on the settling of ''Eretz Yisrael'' (Land of Israel) by independent individuals. Shlomo Ben-Yosef
Shlomo Ben-Yosef (; May 7, 1913 – June 29, 1938) was a member of the Revisionist Zionist paramilitary group Irgun. He is most noted for his participation in an April 21, 1938, attack on a bus carrying Arab civilians, intended as a retaliation for an earlier attack by Arabs against Jews, and emblematic as a rejection of the establishment policy of '' Havlagah'', or restraint. Shlomo-Yisrael Ben-Meir (; 13 August 1910 – 4 April 1971) was an Israeli politician who served as a member of the Knesset from 1952 until his death. Biography Born Shlomo-Yisrael Rosenberg in Warsaw in the Russian Empire (today in Poland), Ben-Meir was educated at the Yitzchak Elchanan yeshiva, before studying at Yeshiva University and New York University.
