Shanahoe GAA
Shanahoe GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association hurling and gaelic football club in the village of Shanahoe, County Laois, Republic of Ireland, Ireland, whose pitches are located about 2 km outside the village. History The current club was founded as recently as 1980 and is located in the parish of Raheen, County Laois and amalgamates with St Fintan's, Colt GAA, St Fintan's, Colt to play underage football and hurling although there is still a very strong sense of rivalry between the two clubs. An older Shanahoe hurling club won the Laois Intermediate Hurling Championship back in 1951, having won the Laois Junior Hurling Championship three years previously. In 1999, the current Shanahoe club enjoyed its most memorable day when Declan Cuddy captained them to a 4-7 to 0-6 win over Ballypickas GAA, Ballypickas in the Laois Junior Hurling Championship final. The Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA; ga, Cumann Lúthchleas Gael ; CLG) is an Irish international amateur sporting and cultural organisation, focused primarily on promoting indigenous Gaelic games and pastimes, which include the traditional Irish sports of hurling, camogie, Gaelic football, Gaelic handball and rounders. Hurling
Hurling ( ga, iománaíocht, ') is an outdoor team game of ancient Gaelic Irish origin, played by men. One of Ireland's native Gaelic games, it shares a number of features with Gaelic football, such as the field and goals, the number of players and much terminology. The same game played by women is called camogie ('), which shares a common Gaelic root. The objective of the game is for players to use an ash wood stick called a hurley (in Irish a ', pronounced or ) to hit a small ball called a ' between the opponent's goalposts either over the crossbar for one point or under the crossbar into a net guarded by a goalkeeper for three points. Gaelic Football
Gaelic football ( ga, Peil Ghaelach; short name '), commonly known as simply Gaelic, GAA or Football is an Irish team sport. It is played between two teams of 15 players on a rectangular grass pitch. The objective of the sport is to score by kicking or punching the ball into the other team's goals (3 points) or between two upright posts above the goals and over a crossbar above the ground (1 point). Players advance the football up the field with a combination of carrying, bouncing, kicking, hand-passing, and soloing (dropping the ball and then toe-kicking the ball upward into the hands). Shanahoe () is a small village in County Laois, Republic of Ireland, Ireland, situated in the centre of the county, 8 km west of Abbeyleix and 7 km south of Mountrath. History and development Evidence of ancient settlement in the area includes a Bronze Age urn which was discovered nearby in the 1930s. The remains of a ringfort are also recorded in Shanahoe townland. Built mainly along the two main approach roads, the village developed as a predominantly linear settlement. Buildings at the village centre include the village church, community hall and national school (Ireland), national (primary) school. Raheen () is a small village south of Portlaoise in County Laois, Ireland. History The Gothic revival Roman Catholic parish church of Raheen is dedicated to St. Fintan and dates from 1857. The first Catholic church, a thatched chapel, was built in 1729 on a site granted by a Protestant family named Baldwin. Mr. Baldwin granted the land after seeing poor Catholics assembled at Mass in a deep pit, which is called the ''Mass Pit'' even to the present time. St Fintan's, Colt GAA
Colt GAA is a Gaelic football and hurling club in County Laois, Ireland. The club is located in the parish of Raheen and amalgamates with Shanahoe GAA and Clonad GAA to play underage football and hurling. Since 2020 it amalgamated with Shanahoe to play hurling in the Laois Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship but later relegated to Intermediate Championship 2021. The club has never won the Laois Senior Hurling Championship but won the Laois Intermediate Hurling Championship four times in 1965, 1971, 1979 and 2008. The club won the division 2 league in 2010 & Senior B Hurling League 2013 Colt has also won the Laois Junior Hurling Championship twice in 1959 and 1996. The Laois Junior Hurling Championship is an annual hurling competition contested by lower-tier Laois GAA clubs. Ballypickas are the title holders (2021) defeating near neighbours Abbeyleix in the Final. Ballypickas are both the current holders and joint most winners at this grade along with Camross (8). Honours The trophy presented to the winners is the Fr Phelan Cup. The winners of the Laois Junior Championship qualify to represent their county in the Leinster Junior Club Hurling Championship. Ballypickas GAA
Ballypickas GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association hurling club in County Laois, Ireland. Ballypickas is located near Abbeyleix and the club grounds are at the quaintly named Cobbler's Hill. The club colours are green and gold hoops. History The club has won many honours over the year's including the Laois Intermediate Hurling Championship twice, in 1937 and 1964. Ballypickas holds the joint record for wins in the Laois Junior Hurling Championship with no less than six titles in the grade. The first of these came back in 1931, with the most recent in 1994. The other wins were in 1936, 1955, 1963 and 1985. The Laois All-County Football League (ACFL) is an annual Gaelic football competition contested by Laois GAA clubs. There are seven divisions and teams are promoted and relegated according to their league standing each year. Prior to the inception of the All-County Football League, league competitions titled the Senior Football League, Intermediate Football League and Junior Football League were in place. These would have roughly equated to the current top three or four divisions in the ACFL.
