Ballypickas GAA
Ballypickas GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association hurling club in County Laois, Ireland. Ballypickas is located near Abbeyleix and the club grounds are at the quaintly named Cobbler's Hill. The club colours are green and gold hoops. History The club has won many honours over the year's including the Laois Intermediate Hurling Championship twice, in 1937 and 1964. Ballypickas holds the record for wins in the Laois Junior Hurling Championship with no less than ten titles in the grade. The first of these came back in 1931, with the most recent in 2024. Ballypickas returned to winning ways in 2007 with a great win in the final of the Laois Junior B Hurling Championship over The Harps and a win over St. Fintans, Colt in the final of the Laois Junior C Hurling Championship to complete a memorable championship double. County Laois ( ; ) is a county in Ireland. It is part of the Eastern and Midland Region and in the province of Leinster. It was known as Queen's County from 1556 to 1922. Abbeyleix
Abbeyleix (; ) is a town in County Laois, Ireland, located around south of the county town of Portlaoise. Abbelyleix is in a civil parish of the same name. Abbeyleix was formerly located on the N8, the main road from Dublin to Cork. At one point, up to 15,000 vehicles passed along the town's main street every day. Since May 2010, however, the town has been bypassed by the M8 motorway, with the former N8 consequently downgraded to the N77 national secondary road, and R639 regional road. Abbeyleix was named Ireland's Tidiest Town in 2023. Laois Intermediate Hurling Championship
The Laois Intermediate Hurling Championship (abbreviated to the Laois IHC) is an annual hurling competition organised by the Laois County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association for the third tier hurling teams in the county of Laois in Ireland. In its current format, the Laois Intermediate Championship begins with a group stage in mid-summer. The eight participating teams are divided into two groups of four and play each other in a round-robin system. The three top-ranking teams in each group proceed to the knockout phase that culminates with the final match at O'Moore Park. The title has been won by 35 different clubs, 26 of which have won the title more than once. Clonaslee is the most successful team in the tournament's history, having won it eight times. The Laois Junior Hurling Championship is an annual hurling competition contested by lower-tier Laois GAA clubs. Ballypickas are the 2024 champions, defeating Borris-Kilcotton GAA in the final. As of then, they have won the most (9). Junior A The trophy presented to the winners is the Fr Phelan Cup. The winners of the Laois Junior Championship qualify to represent thecounty in the Leinster Junior Club Hurling Championship. They often do well there, with the likes of Ballyfin (2011) getting to a Leinster Final after winning the Laois Junior Hurling Championship but Kilkenny GAA club St Patrick's beat them on their way to the All-Ireland title. Harps GAA
The Harps GAA is a hurling, Gaelic football and camogie club in County Laois, Ireland. It is a combination of players from the villages of Cullohill and Durrow. Hurling and camogie are the dominant sports in the club but, the club also fields football teams. The club colours are yellow with red trim, and its grounds are in Durrow and Cullohill. History The club was formed in 1984 as an amalgamation of the old clubs of Durrow and Cullohill. In their very first year, the club reached the Laois Senior Hurling Championship final but lost to Portlaoise in a replay. Ballyroan GAA
Ballyroan Abbey GAA was a Gaelic football club in Ballyroan, County Laois, Ireland. Founded in 1887, the club colours were sky blue and navy, originally having been royal blue with a dominant white V on the front. The club won eight Laois Senior Football Championship titles, the most recent of which was in 1992. It also won the second ever Laois Junior A Football Championship in 1907. In 2006, a number of Ballyroan players were part of the Ballyroan Gaels squad that won the Laois Senior Football Championship. Ballyroan Gaels was an amalgamation of the two neighbouring clubs, Abbeyleix GAA and Ballyroan. In 2007 the two clubs joined together to form the new Ballyroan Abbey GAA club.
