Sermitsiaq Island
Sermitsiaq Island () is an uninhabited island in the Sermersooq municipality in southwestern Greenland. Geography Sermitsiaq is one of three mountainous islands located in the middle section of the long Nuup Kangerlua fjord, to the north of Nuuk, the capital of Greenland. The two sibling islands are Qeqertarsuaq Island and Qoornuup Qeqertarsua Island. The prominent Sermitsiaq mountain topping the island is a landmark of Nuuk, visible from most places in the city. Nuup Kangerlua
Nuup Kangerlua is a long fjord in the Sermersooq municipality in southwestern Greenland. It was formerly known by its colonial name as Godthaab Fjord (), Gilbert Sound and Baal's River.Nicoll, James. Located by the island's capital, Nuuk, it is the longest fjord on the Labrador Sea coast of Greenland, and one of the longest in the inhabited part of the country. Geography The fjord head is located deep inland, with the fjord beginning as an icefjord at , with two glaciers draining the Greenland ice sheet () flowing into the fjord. Sermersooq () is a municipality in Greenland, formed on 1 January 2009 from five previous, smaller municipalities. Its administrative seat is the city of Nuuk (formerly called Godthåb), the capital of Greenland, and it is the most populous municipality in the country, with 23,123 inhabitants as of January 2020. Nuuk
Nuuk (; , formerly ) is the capital and most populous city of Greenland, an autonomous territory in the Kingdom of Denmark. Nuuk is the seat of government and the territory's largest cultural and economic center. It is also the seat of government for the Sermersooq municipality. In January 2025, it had a population of 20,113more than a third of the territory's populationmaking it one of the smallest capital cities in the world by population. The city was founded in 1728 by the Danish-Norwegian missionary Hans Egede when he relocated from the earlier Hope Colony (), where he had arrived in 1721; the governor Claus Paarss was part of the relocation. Sermitsiaq (mountain)
Sermitsiaq () () is a Greenlandic mountain in the district of Nuuk in the Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq. Location The mountain is located in the center of its namesake island and 15 km north-east of Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, in the Nuup Kangerlua (). Its summit is crowned by a sharp west–east ridge, from which three summit points emerge. These resemble a saddle, which gave the mountain and the island its Danish name. While its south side is shaped by steep rock formations, its north side is covered with glaciers. It also harbors a waterfall which is a tourist attraction. Due to its distinctive shape the mountain is Nuuk's most prominent landmark, incorporated into its flag and coat of arms.
