Scythioria Durietzii
''Scythioria'' is a small genus of lichen-forming fungi in the family Teloschistaceae. It comprises three species. Species in this genus are found primarily in the Palaearctic realm, occurring in Eurasia and North Africa. They typically grow on the bark of broad-leaved trees in forested areas, as well as on plant debris, soil, and small shrubs in steppe and semi-desert environments. They are occasionally found on rock surfaces. The body (thallus) of species in this genus forms a crust-like (crustose) growth that either appears as small islands () or becomes embedded within tree bark or rock surfaces. The colour ranges from greenish-white to bright yellow. ''Scythioria'' species typically produce abundant powdery reproductive structures called soredia, and have a thin outer layer () made up of rounded cells that is often not well-developed. Jan Eric Ingvar Kärnefelt (born 1944) is a Swedish lichenologist. Early life and education Kärnefelt was born in Gothenburg, Sweden in 1944. His initial goal in his higher-level studies at University of Cologne in 1966–1967 was to become a dentist. He changed courses in 1968, turning instead to biology at the University of Gothenburg in 1968. Gunnar Degelius, his first teacher during undergraduate studies in botany in 1968, inspired him and others. After Degelius' retirement in 1969, Ingvar continued his studies at Lund University, where Hans Runemark held a position in systematic botany. In 1971 he met Ove Almborn, who became his supervisor. In 1979, he defended his thesis titled "The brown fruticose species of ''Cetraria''". The thesis was later awarded a prize for the best doctoral dissertation in botany at Lund University during a 5-year period by the Royal Physiographic Society in Lund. Sergey Yakovlevich Kondratyuk () (born 17 May 1959) is a Ukrainian botanist specialising in lichenology. His research deals with the taxonomy, floristics, ecology and geography of lichens and lichenicolous fungi. He has worked at the for more than 40 years. In 2014 Kondratyuk was awarded the State Prize of Ukraine in Science and Technology. Early life and education Kondratyuk was born in the Kirovohrad region, in Ulyanovsk. After graduating from school in 1976 he became a student of the Faculty of Biology at Kyiv State University. He specialized in the Department of Lower Plants. While still a student, Kondratyuk started to study lichens under the guidance of O.B. Bloom. Flavoplaca
''Flavoplaca'' is a genus of crust-like or scaly lichens in the family Teloschistaceae. It has about 30 species with a mostly Northern Hemisphere distribution. Taxonomy The genus was circumscribed in 2013 by Ulf Arup, Patrik Frödén and Ulrik Søchting, with '' Flavoplaca citrina'' as the type species. The genus formed a well-supported clade in molecular phylogenetics analysis. ''Flavoplaca'' species are closely related to '' Calogaya'' species that have lobes.
