Scottish Artists Union
The Scottish Artists Union is the representative voice for visual and applied artists in Scotland, one of the largest arts membership organisations in the country. History The SAU was constituted in 2001 with a meeting of Scottish artists at the Scottish Trades Union Congress headquarters in Glasgow. The union claim to be the first new trade union of the 21st century. Scottish artists involved in the initiative from the outset included Guyan Porter, Ann McCluskey, painter Gerry Morris and photographer Ken Palmer. The new trade union was set up with three main aims, protection and extension of artists' rights, to lobby on behalf of artists and to provide financial benefits, such as cheaper insurance. One of the recurring priorities for the SAU has been fair rates of pay for visual artists doing workshops and other such activities. The STUC is a separate organisation from the English and Welsh Trades Union Congress (TUC), having been established in 1897 as a result of a political dispute with the TUC regarding political representation for the Labour movement. The current General Secretary of the Scottish Trades Union Congress is Rozanne Foyer. Guyan Porter
Guyan Porter (born 1971, Aberdeen, Scotland) is a visual artist living in Sussex, England, and working internationally. His work encompasses installation, sculpture, painting, architectural and public interventions and studio-based work that explores 'the sociological and psychological foundations of belief'. With a multi-disciplinary approach, his work is research led and has explored diverse subjects such as statistical data, democracy, early human categorisation and conflicts between internal and external authorities. Mixing traditional forms with processes of political engagement, Porter draws on conceptual and installation art while referencing pioneering social scientists such as Daniel Dennett and Stanley Milgram. Scottish Art
Scottish art is the body of visual art made in what is now Scotland, or about Scottish subjects, since prehistoric times. It forms a distinctive tradition within European art, but the political union with England has led its partial subsumation in British art. The earliest examples of art from what is now Scotland are highly decorated carved stone balls from the Neolithic period. From the Bronze Age there are examples of carvings, including the first representations of objects, and cup and ring marks.
