''The Herald'' is a Scottish broadsheet newspaper founded in 1783. ''The Herald'' is the longest running national newspaper in the world and is the eighth oldest daily paper in the world. The title was simplified from ''The Glasgow Herald'' in 1992. Following the closure of the '' Sunday Herald'', the ''Herald on Sunday'' was launched as a Sunday edition on 9 September 2018. History Founding The newspaper was founded by an Edinburgh-born printer called John Mennons in January 1783 as a weekly publication called the ''Glasgow Advertiser''. Mennons' first edition had a global scoop: news of the treaties of Versailles reached Mennons via the Lord Provost of Glasgow just as he was putting the paper together. Charles Rennie Mackintosh
Charles Rennie Mackintosh (7 June 1868 – 10 December 1928) was a Scottish architect, designer, water colourist and artist. His artistic approach had much in common with European Symbolism. His work, alongside that of his wife Margaret Macdonald, was influential on European design movements such as Art Nouveau and Secessionism and praised by great modernists such as Josef Hoffmann. Mackintosh was born in Glasgow, Scotland and died in London, England. He is among the most important figures of Modern Style (British Art Nouveau style). George MacDonald Fraser
George MacDonald Fraser (2 April 1925 – 2 January 2008) was a Scottish author and screenwriter. He is best known for a series of works that featured the character Harry Paget Flashman, Flashman. Fellowship of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (FRSE) is an award granted to individuals that the Royal Society of Edinburgh, Scotland's national academy of science and Literature, letters, judged to be "eminently distinguished in their subject". William Jack (mathematician)
William Jack FRSE (29 May 1834 – 20 March 1924) was a Scottish mathematician and journalist. He was Editor of the Glasgow Herald newspaper from 1870 to 1876, and Professor of Mathematics at the University of Glasgow from 1879 until 1909. Life He was born on 29 May 1834 in Stewarton in Ayrshire the son of Robert Jack of Irvine. He was educated at Irvine Academy, going on to study mathematics at the University of Glasgow, graduating with an MA in 1853. He then continued his studies at the University of Cambridge, graduating with a second MA in 1859. From 1860 to 1866 he was HM Inspector of Schools for Scotland. In 1866 he accepted the post of Professor of Natural Philosophy (Physics) at Owens College in Manchester and held this position until 1870 when he moved to Glasgow as Editor of the Glasgow Herald newspaper. James Pagan
James Pagan (18 October 1811 – 11 February 1870) was a Scottish reporter and managing editor for the ''Glasgow Herald'' and a noted antiquarian. He is credited with transitioning the ''Herald ''from a tri-weekly publication to one of the first daily newspapers in Scotland as well as greatly improving the standard of reporting in that country. Samuel Hunter (editor)
Samuel Hunter (19 March 1769 – 9 June 1839) was a Scottish journalist, magistrate and officer of yeomanry. He was the editor of the ''Glasgow Herald''. Life He was born on 19 March 1769 in the manse of Stoneykirk, Wigtownshire the son of Rev John Hunter (1716–1781) and his second wife Margaret McHarg (d. 1786). Receiving his elementary education there, he qualified as a surgeon at Glasgow University, and for a time, about the end of the 18th century, practised his profession in Ireland.
