Satish Kumar (boxer)
Subedar Major Satish Kumar (born 4 May 1989) is an Indian amateur boxer and a junior commissioned officer (JCO) of the Indian Army. He won the bronze medal at the 2014 Asian Games at Incheon in the super heavyweight category and silver at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. He is the first Indian boxer to qualify for the Olympics in the super heavyweight category. Early life Born to a farmer in Bulandshahr who had four sons, Satish Kumar wanted to join the army like his elder brother did. He did so in 2008 as a Sepoy and moved to Ranikhet, where he was spotted for his height during a boxing camp and was urged to give the sport a try. Subedar Major is the senior-most rank of junior commissioned officer in the Indian and Pakistani Armies, formerly known as the Viceroy's commissioned officer in the British Indian Army. History During the British Raj, Subedar-Major was the highest rank natives could achieve. On 28 October 1817, the position was introduced by the East India Company (EIC) in the Native infantry of the Bengal Army, one of the three EIC's Presidency armies. The Madras Army adopted this rank on 2 February 1819. In 1825, the Bengal native cavalry established the equivalent rank of Risaldar-Major, which was soon adopted by the Presidency armies of Bombay and Madras. Both ranks would serve as a representative of their people to British officers, but could also command independent companies resp. troops of irregular regiments. Ranikhet ( Kumaoni: ) is a hill station and cantonment town, nearby Almora Town in Almora district in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. It is the home for the Military Hospital, Kumaon Regiment (KRC) and Naga Regiment and is maintained by the Indian Army. 2018 Commonwealth Games
The 2018 Commonwealth Games, officially known as the XXI Commonwealth Games and also known as Gold Coast 2018, was an international multi-sport event for members of the Commonwealth of Nations, Commonwealth that were held on the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia, between 4 and 15 April 2018. Super heavyweight is a weight class in combat sports and competitive bodybuilding. Boxing In amateur boxing, the super heavyweight division is a weight class division for fighters weighing in excess of 91 kilograms (200 pounds). Introduced for the 1984 Summer Olympics, the division is the amateur equivalent of the heavyweight division in professional boxing. The super heavyweight division was introduced because the general increase in the weight of top heavyweights throughout the 20th century meant that the heavyweight division became excessively broad, with the smaller men having little chance of competing effectively. Therefore, the bigger men were split off into the new super heavyweight division.
