Sarah Springman
Dame Sarah Marcella Springman (born 26 December 1956) is a British-Swiss triathlete, civil engineer, and academic. She was educated in England and spent much of her career in Switzerland. Rosemary Mayglothling
Rosemary Frances Mayglothling OLY (née Clugston; born 15 February 1954) is a retired British rower, who competed at the 1980 Summer Olympics. Biography Aged 16, Mayglothling took up skiffing with the Wraysbury Skiff and Punting Club before joining Weybridge Ladies in 1974. As part of the Great Britain squad in 1975, she competed at the 1975 World Rowing Championships in Nottingham. Under her maiden name of Clugston, she won the quadruple sculls event at the 1977 National Championships and was consequently selected for the 1977 World Rowing Championships in Amsterdam. At the 1978 National Championships she won the quadruple sculls and was later selected to represent Great Britain at her third World Championships in 1979 at Bled. 1990 Commonwealth Games
The 1990 Commonwealth Games ( mi, 1990 Taumāhekeheke Commonwealth) were held in Auckland, New Zealand from 24 January – 3 February 1990. It was the 14th Commonwealth Games, and part of New Zealand's 1990 sesquicentennial celebrations. Participants competed in ten sports: athletics, aquatics, badminton, boxing, cycling, gymnastics, judo, lawn bowls, shooting and weightlifting. Netball and the Triathlon were demonstration events. Triathlon
A triathlon is an endurance multisport race consisting of swimming, cycling, and running over various distances. Triathletes compete for fastest overall completion time, racing each segment sequentially with the time transitioning between the disciplines included. The word is of Greek origin, from τρεῖς or ''treis'' (three) and ἆθλος or ''athlos'' (competition). Sir Gordon William Duff, (born 27 December 1947) is a British medical scientist and academic. He was Master (college), Principal of St Hilda's College, Oxford, from 2014 to 2021. Geotechnical Centrifuge Modelling
Geotechnical centrifuge modeling is a technique for testing physical scale models of geotechnical engineering systems such as natural and man-made slopes and earth retaining structures and building or bridge foundations. The scale model is typically constructed in the laboratory and then loaded onto the end of the centrifuge, which is typically between in radius. The purpose of spinning the models on the centrifuge is to increase the g-forces on the model so that stresses in the model are equal to stresses in the prototype. For example, the stress beneath a layer of model soil spun at a centrifugal acceleration of 50 g produces stresses equivalent to those beneath a prototype layer of soil in earth's gravity. Mechanically stabilized earth (MSE or reinforced soil) is soil constructed with artificial reinforcing. It can be used for retaining walls, bridge abutments, seawalls, and dikes. Although the basic principles of MSE have been used throughout history, MSE was developed in its current form in the 1960s. The reinforcing elements used can vary but include steel and geosynthetics. A deep foundation is a type of foundation that transfers building loads to the earth farther down from the surface than a shallow foundation does to a subsurface layer or a range of depths. An abutment is the substructure at the ends of a bridge span or dam supporting its superstructure.
