Zaragoza (), traditionally known in English as Saragossa ( ), is the capital city of the province of Zaragoza and of the autonomous community of Aragon, Spain. It lies by the Ebro river and its tributaries, the Huerva and the Gállego, roughly in the centre of both Aragon and the Ebro basin. On 1 January 2021, the population of the municipality of Zaragoza was 675,301, (as of 2023, the fourth or fifth most populous in Spain) on a land area of . It is the 26th most populous municipality in the European Union. The population of the metropolitan area was estimated in 2006 at 783,763 inhabitants. This is a list of the largest cities in the European Union according to the population within their city boundary. The cities listed all have populations over 300,000. The list deals exclusively with the areas within city administrative boundaries as opposed to urban areas or larger urban zones (metropolitan areas), which are generally larger in terms of population than the main city (although they can also be smaller). Gállego (river)
The Gállego is a river in Aragon, Spain, one of the main tributaries of the Ebro River. It has a watershed of over , with a total length of . The river has its source at in Col d'Aneu, Pyrenees, not far from the Col du Pourtalet. It then flows in the Tena Valley through the municipalities of Sallent de Gállego, Panticosa and Biescas. Starting from Sabiñánigo it forms a wide elbow until Triste, from which it continues in its primitive north–south direction until flowing into the Ebro near Zaragoza. The main tributaries of the Gállego in its upper basin are the Aguas Limpias, Caldarés, Escarra, Lana Mayor and Aurín. In the medium and lower basin, they include Guarga, Seco, Asabón and Sotón. The river's waters are subject to extensive regulation and derivation during its course, thus when it flows into the Ebro its discharge is just some 10 percent of its natural discharge. Huerva
The Huerva River is a river in Aragon, Spain. It is a tributary of the Ebro. Its mean annual discharge is only . Course This long river rises in the Sierra de Cucalón, near Fonfría, Teruel, Fonfría in the Jiloca Comarca. Flowing northwestwards near Lagueruela and Villadoz, it increases its size near Villarreal de Huerva when it is joined by the ''Arroyo de Villalpando''. Then it flows northeastwards past Mainar, Cerveruela, Vistabella de Huerva, Tosos (formerly Alcañiz de la Huerva), Villanueva de Huerva, Muel, Zaragoza, Muel, Cuarte de Huerva, Cadrete and María de Huerva until its waters reach the Ebro at Zaragoza, where is called 'La Huerva'. The Ebro (Spanish and Basque ; , , ) is a river of the north and northeast of the Iberian Peninsula, in Spain. It rises in Cantabria and flows , almost entirely in an east-southeast direction.
