Santiago Abascal Escuza
Santiago Abascal Escuza (30 October 1949 – 23 July 2017) was a Spanish politician. Biography Abascal was born in Amurrio, Álava. His father, Manuel Abascal Pardo, was the town's mayor during the Francoist years. With his wife Isabel Conde Álvarez, he had three children. His son Santiago Abascal Conde became the leader of Vox, while Abascal Escuza's wife, daughter and sister-in-law were all candidates for the party too. During the Spanish transition to democracy, he joined the Spanish National Union (UNE) in 1976, which merged into the People's Alliance (AP) two years later, before becoming the People's Party (PP). He served in Amurrio Town Hall, the Juntas Generales de Álava, and in the Congress of Deputies from April 2003 to 2004. He was targeted by ETA for his political activities, facing arson, vandalism and assassination attempts; he was protected by the Civil Guard and state security. ''El Mundo'' (; ), before ''El Mundo del Siglo Veintiuno'', is the second largest printed daily newspaper in Spain. The paper is considered one of the country's newspaper of record, newspapers of record along with ''El País and ABC (newspaper), ABC.'' Galdakao is a town and municipality located in the province of Biscay, in the autonomous community of Basque Country, northern Spain. ''El Correo'' (; ) is a leading daily newspaper in Bilbao and the Basque Country of northern Spain. It is among best-selling general interest newspapers in Spain. History and profile The brothers Ybarra y de la Revilla – Fernando, Gabriel and Emilio – founded ''El Pueblo Vasco'' ("The Basque People") on 1 May 1910, with Juan de la Cruz as founding editor. The paper supported Vizcaya's young Conservative Party and its editorial line was clerical, Alfonsist monarchist, free press and Basque regional autonomist. 2016 Basque Regional Election
The 2016 Basque regional election was held on Sunday, 25 September 2016, to elect the 11th Parliament of the Basque Autonomous Community. All 75 seats in the Parliament were up for election. The election was held simultaneously with a regional election in Galicia. Lehendakari Iñigo Urkullu announced that the election would be held one month ahead of schedule, on 25 September 2016, based on the "climate of ungovernability" affecting national politics as a result of the ongoing Spanish government formation negotiations, intending to move the regional election as far away as possible from a possible new general election. This prompted Galician president Alberto Núñez Feijóo to hold the Galician regional election in the same date.
