Samson (locomotive)
The ''Samson'' is an English-built railroad steam locomotive made in 1838 that ran on the Albion Mines Railway in Nova Scotia, Canada. It is preserved at the Nova Scotia Museum of Industry in Stellarton, Nova Scotia and is the oldest locomotive in Canada. Construction The locomotive was built in 1838 by Timothy Hackworth at his Shildon railway works, Soho Works in Durham, England. ''Samson'' represents an early design of steam locomotive with a return-flue boiler. The fireman and engineer worked separately on open platforms at either end of the locomotive. It was commissioned for the General Mining Association along with two other locomotives, ''Hercules'' and ''John Buddle'', for the Albion Mines Railway to serve mines in Pictou County, Nova Scotia. Timothy Hackworth
Timothy Hackworth (22 December 1786 – 7 July 1850) was an English steam locomotive engineer who lived in Shildon, County Durham, England and was the first locomotive superintendent of the Stockton and Darlington Railway. Youth and early work Timothy Hackworth was born in Wylam in 1786, five years after his fellow railway pioneer George Stephenson had been born in the same village. Hackworth was the eldest son of John Hackworth who occupied the position of foreman blacksmith at Wylam Colliery until his death in 1804; the father had already acquired a considerable reputation as a mechanical worker and boiler maker. At the end of his apprenticeship in 1810 Timothy took over his father's position. Stourbridge Lion
The ''Stourbridge Lion'' was an early railroad steam locomotive. In 1829 it was the first locomotive to be operated in the United States, although foreign-built, and one of the first locomotives to operate outside Britain. It takes its name from the lion's face painted on the front, and Stourbridge in England, where it was manufactured by the firm Foster, Rastrick and Company in 1829. The locomotive, obtained by the Delaware & Hudson Canal Company (D&H), was shipped to New York in May 1829, where it was tested raised on blocks. It was then taken to Honesdale, Pennsylvania for testing on the company's newly built track. The locomotive performed well in its first test in August 1829, but was found to be too heavy for the track and was never used for its intended purpose of hauling coal wagons. The Liverpool and Manchester Railway (LMR) 57 ''Lion'' is an early 0-4-2 steam locomotive, which had a top speed of and could pull up to 200 tons (203 tonnes). One of a pair designed for hauling freight (the other, number 58, was called ''Tiger''), ''Lion'' was built by Kitson and Company, Todd, Kitson & Laird of Leeds in 1838. It featured in the 1953 Ealing comedy, ''The Titfield Thunderbolt''. ''John Bull'' is a historic British-built Rail transport, railroad steam locomotive that operated in the United States. It was operated for the first time on September 15, 1831, and became the oldest operable steam locomotive in the world when the Smithsonian Institution ran it under its own steam in 1981.Klein and Bell, pp 280–1. ''Sans Pareil'' is a steam locomotive built by Timothy Hackworth which took part in the 1829 Rainhill Trials on the Liverpool and Manchester Railway, held to select a builder of locomotives. The name is French and means 'peerless' or 'without equal'. Design While a capable locomotive for the day, its technology was somewhat antiquated compared to George and Robert Stephenson's ''Rocket'', the winner of the Rainhill Trials and the £500 prize money. Instead of the fire tube boiler of ''Rocket'', ''Sans Pareil'' had a double return flue. To increase the heating surface area, the two flues were joined by a U-shaped tube at the forward end of the boiler; the firebox and chimney were both positioned at the same end, one on either side. ''Derwent'' is an 0-6-0 steam locomotive built in 1845 by William and Alfred Kitching for the Stockton and Darlington Railway (S&DR). It is preserved at Darlington Railway Centre and Museum, now known as ''Head of Steam''. Design ''Derwent'' was designed by Timothy Hackworth and built by W. & A. Kitching in Darlington, England in 1845. It is similar in design to two of their 1842 locomotives, ''Leader'' and ''Trader'', with outside cylinders fixed at the trailing end of the boiler and four-foot diameter, six-wheeled coupled wheels. Withdrawn from service in 1869, it was sold to Pease & Partners for use on their colliery lines and spent some time at the construction of the Waskerley Reservoir in County Durham. ''Bradyll'' is an early steam locomotive built by Timothy Hackworth at his Soho Works in Shildon, England in 1840. Built in 1840, it is one of the oldest surviving locomotives with an 0-6-0 wheel arrangement. Only the 1838-built ''Samson'' (another Hackworth engine) is older. History ''Bradyll'' was built to work on the South Hetton Railway, which ran from Haswell to Seaham Harbour. It was named after Colonel Thomas Bradyll, who owned the mines and promoted the railway and new port built at Seaham. Survival ''Bradyll'' was obsolete by the 1870s, and in 1875 was converted into a snowplough. This was done by removing the cylinders and motion, and adding a blade and weights. By World War Two, it had been withdrawn from this duty, but avoided scrapping as it was on an isolated piece of track.
