Sam Smith (artist)
Sam Smith is an Australian filmmaker and artist, based in the UK. He is one of the directors of the art gallery Obsidian Coast. Early life and education Smith was born in Christchurch. He completed a BFA with Honours at the UNSW Art & Design, College of Fine Arts, Sydney in 2003, and an MFA in Fine Art at Goldsmiths, University of London in 2015. Career Smith's work has been exhibited at film festivals and galleries, including International Film Festival Rotterdam, Whitechapel Gallery and Institute of Contemporary Arts, Les Rencontres Internationales (Paris and Berlin), Australian Centre for the Moving Image (Melbourne), KW Institute for Contemporary Art (Berlin) and the Art Gallery of NSW in Sydney. Broken Dimanche Press (BDP) is an international publisher and art platform founded by John Holten and Line Madsen Simenstad in 2009 in Berlin. History The name of the press was inspired by Yves Klein's Dimanche-Le Journal d’un Seul Jour, a one-day newspaper that he published and distributed on newsstands. Broken Dimanche Press is a European press interested in all aspects of books within the wider discourses of contemporary art and politics. Founded in Berlin in 2009 by John Holten and Line Madsen Simenstad, BDP has executed many book projects, exhibition, reading series and interventions across Europe. Ian Potter Cultural Trust
Sir William Ian Potter (25 August 190224 October 1994), known as Ian Potter, was an Australian stockbroker, businessman and philanthropist. Potter was knighted in 1962. The Ian Potter Foundation, which he established in 1964, has made grants to research institutes, charities, universities and arts organisations. Since 1993, the Ian Potter Cultural Trust has awarded grants to individuals in the arts. Early life and education Potter was the third child of James W. Potter and Maria Louisa Townsend McWhinnie, who was born in Glasgow in June 1869. Potter's parents married in Sydney, New South Wales, in June 1899, then returned to England in 1903 with their three children. Churchie National Emerging Art Prize
The churchie emerging art prize, formerly the churchie national emerging art prize and also known informally as the churchie, is a national Australian non-acquisitive art award and art exhibition, established in 1987. History The award was established in 1987 as an initiative of the Anglican Church Grammar School in Brisbane (known as "Churchie"). Brand + Slater Architects became the major prize sponsors from around 1998. From 2010, the finalists were exhibited in the Griffith University Art Gallery (GUAG) at the Queensland College of Art in Brisbane. Its name was at that time "the churchie national emerging art prize". Helen Lempriere
Helen Dora Lempriere (12 December 1907 – 5 November 1991) was an Australian painter, sculptor and printmaker. Biography Born in the Melbourne suburb of Malvern on 12 December 1907, she was the only child of Charles Algernon Lempriere (brother of businessman Geoffrey Lemprière) and Dora Elizabeth Octavia, née Mitchell (daughter of builder David Mitchell and younger sister of singer Nellie Melba). She was educated at Toorak Ladies' College (1925) and then received tuition in art first from A. D. Colquhoun and later from Justus Jorgensen. ''Conception totenism'', a 1956 painting employing Aboriginal themes, is held in the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
