Sam Amidon
Samuel Tear Amidon (born June 3, 1981) is an American singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist. Early life Amidon's parents are folk artists Peter Amidon and Mary Alice Amidon. They were members of Bread and Puppet Theater in the 1970s, touring with the group in Europe and living on the Bread and Puppet Farm in Glover, Vermont. They appeared on the 1977 Nonesuch recording ''Rivers of Delight with the Word of Mouth Chorus'', a classic recording of shape-note/Sacred Harp folk hymns by early United States, American composers. His younger brother, Stefan Amidon, is a professional drummer who performs with The Sweetback Sisters among other groups. Amidon grew up in Brattleboro, Vermont, where he sang in the family band with his parents and played fiddle from the age of 3. ''But This Chicken Proved Falsehearted'' is the first album of songs by experimental folk artist Sam Amidon, going under the name Samamidon. The album was produced by Doveman, Thomas Bartlett. It was initially released in 2007 by Plug Research in the US and Birdwar in Europe, and was reissued by Omnivore Recordings in 2015. Background and recording At the time of recording, Amidon was living in New York City and playing in the experimental indie rock bands Doveman and Stars Like Fleas. The album was recorded at Bartlett's home in Harlem, where Amidon then lived. Bartlett and Amidon had been friends since childhood and had played music together since a young age, as teenagers in the New England folk group Popcorn Behaviour, and later in Bartlett's indie rock band Doveman. The material drew from traditional American public domain folksongs, reworked by Amidon, as well as a spare reading of the Tears For Fears song "Head Over Heels." Martin Hayes (musician)
Martin Hayes (born 4 July 1962) is an Irish fiddler from County Clare. He is a member of the Irish-American supergroup The Gloaming. Family and early life Hayes was born into a musical family in Maghera, a townland in the parish of Killanena in East County Clare, Ireland. His father, P.J. Hayes, was a noted fiddle player and his grandmother played the concertina. His father and his uncle Paddy Canny, also an influential fiddler, were among the founders of the Tulla Céilí Band in 1946. P.J. Hayes led the band from 1952 until shortly before his death in 2001. Martin Hayes started playing the fiddle at the age of seven, taught by his father. At 13 he won his first of six All-Ireland Fiddle Competitions. He is one of only three fiddlers ever to be named All-Ireland Fiddle Champion in the senior division in two consecutive years (1981 and 1982). Dock Boggs
Moran Lee "Dock" Boggs (February 7, 1898 – February 7, 1971) was an American old-time singer, songwriter, and banjo player. His style of banjo playing, as well as his singing, is considered a unique combination of Appalachian folk music and African-American blues. Contemporary folk musicians and performers consider him a seminal figure, at least in part because of the appearance of two of his recordings from the 1920s, "Sugar Baby" and "Country Blues", on Harry Smith's 1952 collection ''Anthology of American Folk Music''. Boggs was first recorded in 1927 and again in 1929, although he worked primarily as a coal miner for most of his life. Southern Journey
The Southern Journey is the popular name given to a field-recording trip around the Southern States of the US by ethnomusicologist Alan Lomax. He was accompanied on the trip by his then-lover, English folk singer Shirley Collins. It resulted in the first stereo field-recordings in the Southern United States and the "discovery" of Mississippi Fred McDowell. The music collected on the trip has had a significant impact on the development of popular music. Tracks recorded on the trip were sampled by Moby for his album, ''Play''. It also served as the inspiration for the soundtrack to the Coen Brothers' film, ''O Brother Where Art Thou''. The Southern Journey is the subject of an autobiography by Shirley Collins entitled ''America Over the Water''. ''Anthology of American Folk Music'' is a three-volume compilation album released in August 1952 by Folkways Records. The album was compiled by experimental filmmaker Harry Smith from his own personal collection of 78 rpm records. It consists of eighty-four recordings of American folk, blues and country music made and issued from 1926 to 1933 by a variety of performers, divided into three categories: "Ballads", "Social music", and "Songs." Upon its release the Anthology sold relatively poorly and had no notable early coverage besides a minor mention in '' Sing Out!'' magazine in 1958. However, it would eventually become regarded as a landmark and influential release, particularly for the 1950s and 1960s American folk music revival. Donald Ross Cherry (January 11, 1924 – April 4, 2018) was an American traditional pop and big band singer and golfer. In music, he is best known for his 1955 hit " Band of Gold". Biography Cherry was born in Wichita Falls, Texas. He started in his early 20s as a big band singer in the orchestras of Jan Garber and Victor Young. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Air Forces. In 1951, he recorded his first solo hits, " Thinking of You" and "Belle, Belle, My Liberty Belle". In 1955, came his biggest hit, "Band of Gold", which reached No. 4 on the ''Billboard'' chart. It sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc. Putney is a town in Windham County, Vermont, United States. The population was 2,617 at the 2020 census.
