Salomon Leonardus Verveer
Salomon Leonardus Verveer (30 November 1813 – 5 January 1876) was a Dutch marinist and landscape painter. He was one of the most versatile and successful artists at the time of the Dutch romance, both at home and abroad. His sepia gouache and drawings are much appreciated. He is buried at the old Scheveningseweg Jewish cemetery in The Hague. His tomb, a large sarcophagus resting on a catafalque, is one of the most striking monuments in this historic cemetery. Biography Verveer was a prominent Jewish-Hague painter. He was born in The Hague and trained as a painter by Bartholomeus Johannes van Hove. He worked with Jan Hendrik Weissenbruch and taught Frederik Hendrik Kaemmerer. He initially painted city and harbor scenes, river landscapes and village scenes. Its full official title was the . It was the first of ten major expositions held in the city between 1855 and 1937. The Order of the Netherlands Lion, also known as the Order of the Lion of the Netherlands (, ) is a Dutch honours system, Dutch order of chivalry founded by William I of the Netherlands on 29 September 1815. The Order of the Netherlands Lion was until recently awarded to eminent individuals from all walks of life, including generals, ministers of the crown, mayors of large towns, professors and leading scientists, industrialists, high-ranking civil servants, presiding judges and renowned artists.
