SIGNIS Awards (Sri Lanka)
The SIGNIS Awards are presented annually by SIGNIS, the Roman Catholic lay movement for communication media professionals, to recognize excellence of professionals in the film industry, including directors, actors, and writers. There are SIGNIS chapters in numerous countries and this article deals with the Sri Lankan chapter. Background SIGNIS (Sri Lanka) developed in November 2001 from the merger of national chapters of OCIC and Unda. OCIC was the international Catholic communications organisation for cinema and Unda was the international Catholic organisation for radio and television. Both organisations were founded in 1928 in Sri Lanka. SIGNIS Sri Lanka is one of 16 Asian units of the worldwide association of SIGNIS, which general secretariat is established in Brussels, Belgium. SIGNIS
SIGNIS (official name: World Catholic Association for Communication) is a Roman Catholic ecclesial movement of the Faithful for professionals in the communication media, including press, radio, television, cinema, video, media education, internet, and new technology. It is a non-profit organization with representation from over 100 countries. It was formed in November 2001 by the merger of International Catholic Organization for Cinema and Audiovisual (OCIC) and International Catholic Association for Radio and Television (Unda). At its World Congress in Quebec in 2017, SIGNIS welcomed also former member organisations of the International Catholic Union of the Press (UCIP). The word SIGNIS (always in uppercase) is a combination of the words SIGN and IGNIS (Latin for "fire"). It is not an acronym. Boodee Keerthisena
Vishvanath Buddhika Keerthisena, also known as Boodee Keerthisena, is a Sri Lankan filmmaker. He began his career drawing comics before moving into painting, dress design, and visual arts. He moved into music in the late 1980s, and performed in a band called "''Boo-Dee and the Woo-Zees''" (1986–1992) as the lead singer. In 1987, he went to New York City to study film. He joined the film department to study film and television at the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan. His thesis, presented at his graduation in 1995, was the feature film ''Veils of Maya'' (''Sihina Deshaye''n ). The film won 31 awards in many festivals, including Best Director and Best Film. Since he returned to Sri Lanka in 1995, he has directed and produced over 100 TV commercials, more than 30 documentaries, two TV series, and many music videos. Dharmasena Pathiraja
Pathiraja Navaratne Wanninayake Mudiyanselage Ranjith Dharmasena (28 March 1943 – 28 January 2018) was a Sri Lankan film director and screenwriter. He has been referred to as a 'rebel with a cause', an ‘''enfant terrible'' of the '70s', and is widely recognized as the pioneer of Sri Lankan cinema’s 'second revolution'. He is also renowned as an academic, playwright and poet. Early life Educated at Dharmaraja College, Kandy, Pathiraja graduated from the University of Peradeniya with an honours degree in Sinhala and Western Classical Culture in 1967. Subsequently he began work as a lecturer in Drama and Performance Arts, and later obtained a PhD in Bengali cinema from Monash University. The 42nd SIGNIS Sri Lanka Salutation Awards Ceremony 2018 festival (Sinhala: 42 වැනි සිග්නීස් සම්මාන උලෙළ), presented by the SIGNIS and organized by Sri Lanka Catholic Cinema Parshadaya, was held to honor the cinema and television in Sri Lanka on August 2, 2019, at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall, Colombo, Sri Lanka. The Secretary General of International Signis, Ricardo Younes; and Bertha Detta Padiandrajani (Rome) Maria C. Lorenzo, Secretary General of Asia Signis were the chief guests at the awards night. The keynote address was delivered by Prof. Saumya Liyanage. The 41st SIGNIS Sri Lanka Salutation Awards Ceremony 2018 festival (Sinhala: 41 වැනි සිග්නීස් සම්මාන උලෙළ), presented by the SIGNIS, was held to honor the cinema and television in Sri Lanka on August 25, 2018, at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall, Colombo, Sri Lanka. Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith, Archbishop of Colombo, Sri Lanka was the chief guest at the awards night. Theme for the Salutation Ceremony was "The Proud Display of Youth Vitality in the Global Motion Picture Discourse".
