The SA Cup was created to replace the Mzanzi Challenge which was played for only one season in 2023 and was won by the . The inaugural 2024 SA Cup competition was contested between 21 March 2024 - 25 May 2024 and the primary function of the SA Cup is to serve as qualification to the Currie Cup Premier Division and Currie Cup First Division respectively. The domestic teams with a place in the United Rugby Championship, namely the , , and are excluded from the SA Cup. Bankfin Nite Series
The Bankfin Nite Series was a rugby union competition in South Africa. There were two editions of this competition, in 1996 and 1997. It was sponsored by Barclays Africa Group#History, Bankfin, who also sponsored the Currie Cup competitions. After two seasons, it was succeeded by the Vodacom Cup competition. In 1996, there were twelve competing teams – ten of the fourteen provincial unions, plus teams from Namibia and Zimbabwe. The four provincial unions that took part in the 1996 Super 12 season - , , and – did not play in the competition. won the competition, beating 46–34 in the final. Namibia and Zimbabwe withdrew from the 1997 competition, while replaced defending champions , who in turn replaced Western Province in the 1997 Super 12 season. The Vodacom Cup was an annual rugby union competition in South Africa. Annual Vodacom Cup competitions were played between its inaugural season in 1998 and 2015 and was contested between February and May each year. The Vodacom Cup was the successor of the Bankfin Nite Series which was played in 1996 and 1997. Mobile communications provider Vodacom was the title sponsor for the entire duration of the competition. The competition was the third most prestigious in South African rugby, behind Super Rugby and the Currie Cup.
