The Rugby Challenge – known as the SuperSport Rugby Challenge for sponsorship reasons – was the secondary domestic rugby union competition in South Africa from 2017 to 2019. The competition was organised by the South African Rugby Union and featured all fourteen South African provincial unions plus n side the and the Zimbabwe Academy. The inaugural season of the competition was in 2017, and was intended as the long-term successor of the Vodacom Cup competition. The competition was played at roughly the same time as Super Rugby each season, and featured a combination of Super Rugby players returning from injury, reserve players attempting to maintain their fitness levels and younger players trying to break through to the Super Rugby or Currie Cup sides. Bankfin Nite Series
The Bankfin Nite Series was a rugby union competition in South Africa. There were two editions of this competition, in 1996 and 1997. It was sponsored by Barclays Africa Group#History, Bankfin, who also sponsored the Currie Cup competitions. After two seasons, it was succeeded by the Vodacom Cup competition. In 1996, there were twelve competing teams – ten of the fourteen provincial unions, plus teams from Namibia and Zimbabwe. The four provincial unions that took part in the 1996 Super 12 season - , , and – did not play in the competition. won the competition, beating 46–34 in the final. Namibia and Zimbabwe withdrew from the 1997 competition, while replaced defending champions , who in turn replaced Western Province in the 1997 Super 12 season. The SA Cup was created to replace the Mzanzi Challenge which was played for only one season in 2023 and was won by the . The inaugural 2024 SA Cup competition was contested between 21 March 2024 - 25 May 2024 and the primary function of the SA Cup is to serve as qualification to the Currie Cup Premier Division and Currie Cup First Division respectively.
