The Russia national speedway team are one of the major international motorcycle speedway nations. History As the Soviet Union The Soviet Union speedway team (which was composed predominantly of Russian riders but also Ukrainian, Latvian and Belarus riders) first competed in the 1961 edition of the Speedway World Team Cup, where they finished second in the East European round. Throughout the history of World Team Cup, the team were regular World Cup contenders from 1961 until their final World Cup in 1983. They reached the final on 12 occasions, winning the silver medal five times, in 1964, 1966, 1971, 1972, 1975 and the bronze medals three times, in 1967, 1969 and 1973. Motorcycle speedway, usually referred to simply as speedway, is a motorcycle sport involving four and sometimes up to six riders competing over four clockwise, anti-clockwise laps of an oval circuit. The motorcycles are specialist machines that use only one gear and have no brakes. Racing takes place on a flat oval track usually consisting of soil, dirt, loosely packed shale, or crushed rock (mostly used in Australia and New Zealand). Competitors use this surface to slide their machines sideways, powersliding or broadsiding into the bends. On the straight sections of the track, the motorcycles reach speeds of up to . The Germany national speedway team are one of the teams that compete in international team motorcycle speedway. History The West Germany national speedway team competed in the inaugural Speedway World Team Cup in 1960 and the following year in 1961, the East Germany national speedway team competed in the World Cup for the first time. Traditionally the West German team were much stronger and produced the majority of the leading riders from the German nations. West Germany and East Germany became the Germany national speedway team in 1991, following the events that led to the German reunification between 1989 and 1991. The German team reached the final of the World Team Cup in 1994, 1996, 1997 and 1998 but failed to make any impact over the next two decades, until they competed in consecutive finals of the Speedway of Nations in 2018 and 2019. Alfred Smoczyk Stadium () is a stadium in Leszno, Poland. It is currently used for speedway matches and is the home stadium of Unia Leszno. The stadium has a capacity of 16,700 people. The stadium is located on ''ulica Strzelecka 7''. History Alfred Smoczyk (1928–1950) was the first Polish speedway superstar. He successfully competed on Dutch tracks in the late 1940s, but died in a road accident in October 1950. He was the first Individual Polish Champion after World War II (in 1949). The year after his death in 1951, the Alfred Smoczyk Memorial event was first held and shortly afterwards in April 1952, plans were put into action to build a new speedway stadium. Roman Alexandrovich Povazhny (Russian: ''Поважный, Роман Александрович''; born October 23, 1976) is a former international motorcycle speedway rider and a former champion of Russia. He earned 21 caps for the Russia national speedway team. Career Povazhny won the Russian national championship in 2001. He started his British leagues career with Eastbourne Eagles and would ride with them for four seasons in 1999, 2001, 2004 and 2007. Inbetween he rode for Oxford Cheetahs during the 2000 season. Artem Grigoryevich Laguta (; born 13 November 1990) is a Russian motorcycle speedway rider and member of the Russian national team. He is the 2021 World Champion. Career details Laguta became the Russian champion in 2010 and 2011. In August 2010, during the Speedway Grand Prix Qualification he won the GP Challenge, which ensured that he claimed a permanent slot for the 2011 Grand Prix. He is also a three times world team champion with Russia after partnering Emil Sayfutdinov during three consecutive years, as Russia won the Speedway of Nations in 2018, 2019 and 2020. Grigory Grigorievich Laguta (born 9 April 1984) is a motorcycle speedway rider from Russia. He is a six-times champion of Russia. Career Laguta is a six-time Russian Champion winning the title in 2012, 2013, 2014, 2016, 2022 and 2023. Laguta previously held two speedway licences: Russian (MFR) and Latvian (LaMSF). This allowed him to become a four times champion of Latvia. In 2017, he was suspended for two years for a doping violation after having used meldonium. However, he later returned and in 2023, won his sixth Russian national title, which took him to just one win behind the Mikhail Starostin in the all-time list of winners. Emil Damirovich Sayfutdinov (; born 26 October 1989) is a motorcycle speedway rider from Russia. He is a member of the Russia national speedway team. He is a three times World team champion, twice World Junior champion and a two-time winner of the European Championships in 2014 and 2015. Career history Sayfutdinov gained his speedway licence in 2005, just before his 16th birthday. He started his career in the Russian league with Mega-Lada Togliatti and won the Russian Champion title. The Australia national speedway team is one of the leading teams in international motorcycle speedway, with the country regarded as the birthplace of the sport in the 1920s. The team are five times champions of the world having won the sports premier team competition in 1976, 1999, 2001, 2002 and 2022. History The national speedway team held test matches against the England as early as 1928, although the first official test match is listed as 30 June 1930 at Wimbledon Stadium. The Skrotfrag Arena is a 15,000-capacity multi-use stadium in Målilla, Sweden. The stadium is regularly used as the venue for the World Championship races; the Speedway Grand Prix of Scandinavia and the Speedway Grand Prix of Sweden (rounds of the Speedway Grand Prix, which is the premier world event in motorcycle speedway. Oleg Anatolyevich Kurguskin (; born 11 April 1966, in Elista) is a Russian motorcycle speedway rider who was a member of Russia team at 2001 and 2005 Speedway World Cup.
