Robert Kane (chemist)
Sir Robert John Kane (24 September 1809 – 16 February 1890) was an Irish chemist and educator. Early life Kane was born at 48 Henry Street, Dublin on 24 September 1809 to John and Eleanor Kean (née Troy). His father was involved in the Irish Rebellion of 1798 and fled for a time to France where he studied chemistry. Back in Dublin, Kean (now Kane) founded the Kane Company and manufactured sulphuric acid. The young Kane studied chemistry at his father's factory, and attended lectures at the Royal Dublin Society as a teenager. He published his first paper in 1828, ''Observations on the existence of chlorine in the native peroxide of manganese'', in the London Quarterly Journal of Science, Literature and Art. The following year, his description of the natural arsenide of manganese resulted in the compound being named Kaneite in his honour. Royal University Of Ireland
The Royal University of Ireland was a university in Ireland that existed from 1879 to 1909. It was founded in accordance with the University Education (Ireland) Act 1879 as an examining and degree-awarding university based on the model of the University of London. A royal charter was issued on 27 April 1880 and examinations were open to candidates irrespective of attendance at college lectures. The first chancellor was the Irish chemist Robert Kane (chemist), Robert Kane. The Royal University had premises in Dublin, Belfast, Cork, Limerick, Galway and Derry.
