Robert Howard (unionist)
Robert Howard (February 8, 1845 – 1902) was a British-born American labor union leader and politician. Born in Nantwich, in Cheshire, to parents from Ireland, Howard began working as a piercer in a silk mill in Macclesfield when only 8 years old. When he was 10, he moved to Stockport, to work with bobbins in a cotton mill. Five years later, he became a spinner, and at the age of 25, he became president of the local trade union of spinners. As the leader of the union, he sought to avoid strikes through negotiation, and campaigned for a maximum nine-hour working day. He was offered a position as an overseer, but declined it, as he did not want a management position. In 1873, Howard emigrated to the United States, settling in Fall River, Massachusetts. Knights Of Labor
The Knights of Labor (K of L), officially the Noble and Holy Order of the Knights of Labor, was the largest American labor movement of the 19th century, claiming for a time nearly one million members. It operated in the United States as well in Canada, and had chapters also in Great Britain and Australia. Its most important leader was Terence V. Powderly. The Knights of Labor promoted the social and cultural uplift of the worker, and demanded the eight-hour day. In some cases it acted as a labor union, negotiating with employers, but it was never well organized or funded. It was notable in its ambition to organize across lines of gender and race and in the inclusion of both skilled and unskilled labor. After a rapid expansion in the mid-1880s, it suddenly lost its new members and succumbed to a jurisdictional battle with the new American Federation of Labor. Gabriel Edmonston
Gabriel Edmonston (March 29, 1839 – May 16, 1918) was an American labor unionist and carpenter. Born in Washington, D.C., Edmonston trained as a carpenter. During the American Civil War, he served in the Confederate Army, in the First Corps, Army of Northern Virginia, being taken prisoner on four occasions, and wounded twice. After the war, Edmonston returned to Washington. He came to believe that carpenters needed to form labor unions in order to improve their pay and working conditions, and in 1881, he formed a local union. He argued that it should admit all carpenters, regardless of ethnicity, nationality or religion. Later in the year, he played a role in founding the United Brotherhood of Carpenters, becoming its first president. In 1881/1882, Edmonston served as president of the UBC.
