Robert Francis Ruttledge
Robert "Robin" Francis Ruttledge MC (11 September 1899 – 13 January 2002) was an Irish ornithologist and soldier also known as "The Major", who is best remembered for his work in the systematic recording and conservation of Irish birds over a period of sixty years. Life Robert Francis Ruttledge was born in Erin Dale, Mortarstown Upper, County Carlow on 11 September 1899. He was the eldest son of Thomas Henry Bruen Ruttledge and his second wife Mary Caroline (née Browne-Clayton). Ruttledge grew up in County Mayo, at the family home of Bloomfield House. He attended Marlborough College and later the Quetta cadet college, India. Ruttledge married Mabel Rose (née Burke) in 1928, with whom he had two daughters. BirdWatch Ireland
BirdWatch Ireland (BWI) is a voluntary conservation organisation and registered charity devoted to the conservation and protection of wild birds and their habitats in Ireland. It was formerly known as the Irish Wildbird Conservancy (IWC). Irish Wildbird Conservancy was founded in 1968, among others by Major Robert (Robin) Ruttledge, an Irish ornithologist who became its first president. BWI has over 15,000 active members and supporters, and a network of 30 branches actively promoting the importance of birds and habitats, and general conservation issues. It publishes the annual journal '' Irish Birds'' and the quarterly magazine ''Wings''. It manages a number of nature reserves including Little Skellig. ''Irish Birds'' is the annual journal of BirdWatch Ireland. Its first issue was published in 1977, superseding the ''Irish Bird Report'', which had been published from 1953 (number 1) to 1975 (number 23). ''Irish Birds'' publishes papers and notes on all aspects of birds in Ireland, as well as incorporating the annual Irish Bird Report and Irish Ringing Report. The founding editor of ''Irish Birds'' was Clive Hutchinson (1977-1984).
