Richard Hamilton (officer)
Richard Hamilton PC (Ire) (1717) was an officer in the French and the Irish army. In France he fought in the Franco-Dutch War (1672–1678) under Turenne and the War of the Reunions (1683–1684) at the Siege of Luxembourg. In Ireland he fought for the Jacobites during the Williamite War, rising to the rank of lieutenant-general. He defeated the Protestants of Ulster at the Break of Dromore and the Cladyford in 1689. Later that year he commanded during part of the Siege of Derry. In 1690 he fought valiantly at the Battle of the Boyne, where he was taken prisoner. In April 1692 he was exchanged for Lord Mountjoy. Hamilton died in French exile. Birth and origins Richard was born about 1649, in Ireland, before his family fled to France in 1651 during the Cromwellian Conquest. Richard Hamilton (January 23, 1836 – July 6, 1881), a Union Navy Coal Heaver, received the Medal of Honor for bravery for his participation in the sinking of the CSS ''Albemarle'' during the American Civil War. Military service Hamilton, a native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, served in the Union Navy from 1862 to 1865. He was taken prisoner after the action on the Roanoke River for which he would later be honored. An article appeared in the July 4, 1879, Philadelphia Times newspaper about Hamilton. It read: Richard Hamilton lives at 260 Liberty street, Camden. He declares that he was one of the number who, with Cushing, aided in blowing up the Rebel ram Albemarle, at Plymouth, N. Richard Vesey Hamilton
Sir Richard Vesey Hamilton (28 May 1829 – 17 September 1912) was a Royal Navy officer. As a junior officer he twice volunteered to take part in missions to search for Sir John Franklin's ill-fated expedition to find the Northwest Passage. He also took part in the Battle of Fatshan Creek in June 1857 during the Second Opium War. Later in his career he became commander-in-chief at China Station and took his fleet into Vladivostok harbour in 1886, which surprised the Russians. He became First Naval Lord in July 1889 and in that role he was primarily concerned with implementing the recommendations contained in a report on the disposition of the ships of the Royal Navy many of which were unarmoured and together incapable of meeting the combined threat from any two of the other naval powers ("the Two-power Standard"): these recommendations had been enshrined in the Naval Defence Act 1889. Richard Hamilton, 4th Viscount Boyne (24 March 1724 – 30 July 1789) was an Irish peer and politician. After serving in the Royal Navy and Irish House of Commons, he inherited the viscountcy from his Frederick Hamilton, 3rd Viscount Boyne in 1772 and died in 1789. Early life Hamilton was born on 24 March 1724. He was the younger son of Gustavus Hamilton (second of Gustavus Hamilton, 1st Viscount Boyne), and his wife the Dorothea Bellew (a daughter of Richard Bellew, 3rd Baron Bellew of Duleek). His uncles were Frederick Hamilton and Henry Hamilton. Career Hamilton joined the Royal Navy, and was promoted to lieutenant on 2 June 1748. Two days after this he was appointed to the 80-gun ship of the line HMS ''Russell'' as her third lieutenant, in the Mediterranean Sea.
