Reflex Records
Reflex Records was an American independent record label formed by the members of hardcore punk band Hüsker Dü and Terry Katzman. It was formed to help promote independent bands, after Twin/Tone Records rejected Hüsker Dü's first single in 1979. (Bassist Greg Norton told ''Rolling Stone'' in 2017 that the label was named after their experience with Twin/Tone: "We named our label Reflex Records because that was our reflex to being rejected.") The label was funded by a loan from Hüsker drummer Grant Hart's mother's credit union. Under Katzman's guidance, the label would also release several compilations of regional underground and alternative bands, as well as albums by local post-punk bands Rifle Sport, Man Sized Action, Otto's Chemical Lounge, and Articles of Faith, as well as the Minutemen's 1985 EP '' Tour-Spiel''. Terry Katzman
Terry James Katzman (March 8, 1955 – November 8, 2019) was a producer, sound engineer, archivist, and record-store owner in Minneapolis, Minnesota, known for his work with the Twin Cities music scene, particularly during the formative early years of Hüsker Dü, The Replacements, and The Suburbs. Early life Katzman grew up in Excelsior, Minnesota and attended Minnetonka High School, then St. Cloud State University and the University of Minnesota. Career Katzman was a mainstay of the early punk rock scene in Minneapolis beginning in the late 1970s. Hüsker Dü guitarist Bob Mould recalls Katzman working backstage when Mould attended his first concert in Minneapolis, a Suicide Commandos performance at Jay's Longhorn Bar in 1978. He was a sound engineer at legendary club First Avenue, where he became the Replacements' preferred sound mixer for their shows. Rifle Sport
Rifle Sport was an American post punk band active in the 1980s and 1990s, from Minneapolis, Minnesota. The band took its name from an arcade in downtown Minneapolis which was open in the 1940s to 1960s. An unrelated art gallery, Rifle Sport Gallery, also named after the arcade and housed in its old space, established their name after the band. Drummer and vocalist Todd Trainer later formed Shellac with Steve Albini formerly of Big Black. Rifle Sport was honored with a star on the outside mural of the Minneapolis nightclub First Avenue, recognizing performers that have played sold-out shows or have otherwise demonstrated a major contribution to the culture at the iconic venue. Receiving a star "might be the most prestigious public honor an artist can receive in Minneapolis," according to journalist Steve Marsh. ''Everything Falls Apart'' is the debut studio album by the American hardcore band Hüsker Dü. It was released in January 1983 through Reflex Records. Critical reception In a 1983 ''Trouser Press'' review, Jon Young said, "Yeah! Hyperspeed aggression!...Buzzsaw guitars! Shouting! A disrespectful version of " Sunshine Superman"!...Not Bad!" Chuck Eddy contends that the album "has no melody to speak of, just one microscopic blot after another, with so little time-out space that it's not so much as if there's eighteen real short (mainly under a minute) combustions as two real long ones, one per side. Here and there inside the unrelenting compost you detect word hooks (e.g., the days of the week) or bass hooks, but that's it." Statues (Hüsker Dü Song)
"Statues" is a song by Hüsker Dü released as a single in 1981. It was the band's first single, b/w the song "Amusement." This release finds the band in a period where its music was drifting from punk to post-punk. 40 years after its release, Briony Edwards of '' Louder'' wrote, "Though it shows an interest in experimentation that would follow the band through each stage of their career, the ... Krautrock inspired, Keith Levene-esque guitar is far removed from the boisterous hardcore that followed in its wake." The single's pressing was limited to 2,000 copies. The two tracks appear on the '' Everything Falls Apart and More'' CD. In 2013, the Numero Group reissued the single with the studio outtakes "Writer's Cramp" and "Let's Go Die" as a 7" pairing in a gatefold jacket. ''Tour-Spiel'' is an EP by Minutemen, released in 1985. It contains four songs, all covers. A studio version of track 1 appears on ''Double Nickels on the Dime''. Studio versions of "Lost" and "The Red and The Black", with different musical arrangements, appear on ''3-Way Tie (For Last)''. The songs were recorded in the studio of a Tucson radio station. Minutemen (band)
Minutemen were an American punk rock band formed in San Pedro, California, in 1980. Composed of guitarist/vocalist D. Boon, bassist/vocalist Mike Watt, and drummer George Hurley, Minutemen recorded four albums and eight EPs before Boon's death in an automobile accident in 1985; the band broke up shortly thereafter. They were noted in the California punk community for a philosophy of "jamming econo"—a sense of thriftiness reflected in their touring and short, tight songs, and for their eclectic style, drawing on hardcore punk, funk, jazz, and other sources. Man Sized Action
Man Sized Action was a post-punk group from Minneapolis. John Leland of ''Trouser Press'' described the band as an "unpretentious lot" in the vein of Hüsker Dü who "opened up punk structures with distorted, ringing guitar, some off-kilter rhythms and ... a neanderthal, propulsive attack to fundamentally poppy songs." Influential musician and producer Steve Albini of Big Black called them "one of the finest bands in Minneapolis or anywhere." Career Man Sized Action was formed by vocalist Patrick Woods, guitarist Tom "Tippy" Roth, bassist Kelly Linehan, and drummer Tony Pucci, all part of the same punk-rock scene that spawned Hüsker Dü.
