Ravi Shankar
Ravi Shankar (; born Robindro Shaunkor Chowdhury, sometimes spelled as Rabindra Shankar Chowdhury; 7 April 1920 – 11 December 2012) was an Indian sitarist and composer. A sitar virtuoso, he became the world's best-known export of North Indian classical music in the second half of the 20th century, and influenced many musicians in India and throughout the world. Shankar was awarded India's highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna, in 1999. Shankar was born to a Bengali Brahmin family in India, and spent his youth as a dancer touring India and Europe with the dance group of his brother Uday Shankar. He gave up dancing in 1938 to study sitar playing under court musician Allauddin Khan. Ravi Shankar (born 13 May 1956) is an Indian yoga guru, a spiritual leader. He is frequently referred to as Sri Sri (honorific), Guru ji, or Gurudev. From around the mid 1970s, he worked as an apprentice under Mahesh Yogi, the founder of Transcendental Meditation. Ravisankar is an Indian playback singer. He has recorded about 100 songs in the Malayalam language. Early life Ravisankar was born and raised in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India, to S. Ramachandran Nair and S. Hamsini Thankam. He started learning music as a child from his mother, a teacher at Bharatiya Vidyabhavan, Trivandrum. He went on to study music formally under L. Vaikuntapaty, Perumbavoor G. Ravindranath and M. G. Radhakrishnan. As a player, he played for the India national cricket team between 1981 and 1992 in both Test matches and One Day Internationals.
