Rashchakra
The Raash-Chakra or The Holy Wheel is a structure built during the Cooch Behar Rash Mela that is held in honour of Lord Madan Mohan, the avatar of Lord Krishna in Cooch Behar, West Bengal in India. Every year the Raash-Chakra built by a group of artisans on behalf of the Debuttor Trust Board which organizes the Lord Madan Mohan Raash Utsav. The Raash Mela is held centering around the Lord Madan Mohan Raash Utsav at the Madan Mohan Temple and the Raash Mela spreads out around the temple in its adjacent areas up to Rash Mela Ground, Cooch Behar. The chakra and its significance A symbol of secular mood in the district, this Raash-Chakra is built on the Raash-Danda which is a straight log of Saal Tree that is kept submerged throughout the year before the festival by "Debuttor Trust Board in the water of Bairagi Dighi" that is situated adjacent to the Cooch Behar's Madan Mohan Temple. Cooch Behar (), also known as Koch Bihar, is a city in the Indian state of West Bengal and it stands on bank of the Torsa river. The city is the headquarters of the Cooch Behar district. During the British Raj, Cooch Behar was the seat of the princely state of Koch Bihar. In the North Bengal region, the only planned city with royal heritage is Cooch Behar. The city is a popular tourist destination and cultural hub in Bengal. Etymology The name ''Cooch Behar'' is derived from two words—'' Cooch'', a corrupted form of the word ''Koch'', the name of the Koch tribes, and the word ''Behar'' is derived from '' vihara'' meaning ''land or settlement.'' Cooch Behar ''Rash Mela'' (commonly known as just Rash Mela or Ras Mela; Bengali language, Bengali: রাস মেলা) is the annual winter carnival in Cooch Behar, West Bengal, India which is organised on the occasion of ''Rash Purnima'' every year between the months of November and December every year since the rule of the 17th King of Cooch Behar State, Koch Bihar Maharaja Harendra Narayan. It is being held every year except in 1912 due to the 1899–1923 cholera pandemic, cholera outbreak and in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The duration of the carnival varies between 15-20 days every year. History The exact date of inauguration of the carnival is not known but is widely accepted that it began during the rule of the 17th King of Koch Bihar, i.e. Maharaja Harendra Narayan, during 1783-1839.
