Rajshahi-4 is a constituency represented in the Jatiya Sangsad (National Parliament) of Bangladesh since 2024 by Abul Kalam Azad of the Awami League. Boundaries The constituency encompasses Bagmara Upazila. History The constituency was created for the first general elections in newly independent Bangladesh, held in 1973. In the 2018 general election, the ruling Awami League renominated Enamul Haque. On the other hand, BNP gave ticket to Abu Hena. However, in a lopsided victory, Enamul Haque retained the seat with a thumping majority. Enamul Haque ( bn, এনামুল হক) is a Bangladesh Awami League politician and Member of Parliament from Rajshahi-4. Early life Haque was born on 21 October 1969. General elections are scheduled to be held in Bangladesh in January 2024. Background The current Sangsad ( 11th) is scheduled to expire on 29 January 2024, as the first session of this parliament sat on 30 January 2019 and the tenure of a parliament lasts five years. The Awami League won the 2018 general elections and formed the government. Incumbent Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has hinted she does not intend to lead her party, the Awami League, into another election. Electoral system The 350 members of the Jatiya Sangsad consist of 300 directly elected seats using first-past-the-post voting in single-member constituencies, and an additional 50 seats reserved for women. The reserved seats are elected proportionally by the elected members. Each parliament sits for a five-year term. Nadim Mostafa
Nadim Mostafa ( bn, নাদিম মোস্তফা; 1965/1966 – 30 June 2024) was a Bangladesh Nationalist Party politician and a Member of Parliament of Rajshahi-4. He was a close associate of Tarique Rahman, son of Ziaur Rahman and Khaleda Zia. Career Mostafa was elected to parliament from Rajshahi-4 as a Bangladesh Nationalist Party candidate in 1996 and 2001. He was the special secretary of Bangladesh Nationalist Party. Mostafa went into hiding in early 2007 during the 2006–2008 Bangladeshi political crisis. On 3 July 2007, Mostafa was sentenced to five years imprisonment for extortion. Charges were framed against him on 24 April 2007 for supporting militants. 2018 Bangladeshi General Election
General elections were held in Bangladesh on 30 December 2018 to elect 300 directly-elected members of the Jatiya Sangsad. The result was a landslide victory for the Awami League led by Sheikh Hasina. According to political scientist Ali Riaz, the elections were not free and fair. Jatiya Sangsad
The Jatiya Sangsad ( bn, জাতীয় সংসদ, lit=National Parliament, translit=Jatiyô Sôngsôd), often referred to simply as the ''Sangsad'' or JS and also known as the House of the Nation, is the supreme legislative body of Bangladesh. The current parliament of Bangladesh contains 350 seats, including 50 seats reserved exclusively for women. Elected occupants are called Member of Parliament, or MP. The 11th National Parliamentary Election was held on 30 December 2018. Elections to the body are held every five years, unless a parliament is dissolved earlier by the President of Bangladesh. The 300 single-seat constituencies of the Jatiya Sangsad were contested by 1,935 candidates representing 54 parties and including 484 independents.
