Rainy Day (band)
Rainy Day was an all-star Paisley Underground band, a collaborative project composed of members of Los Angeles-based bands including the Dream Syndicate, the Three O'Clock, Rain Parade and the Bangles. They began collaborating after meeting at a barbecue hosted by members of Green on Red. Rainy Day recorded and released an eponymous album in 1984. It pays tribute to various psychedelic and folk rock acts, and included covers of songs by Bob Dylan, the Beach Boys, Neil Young (with Buffalo Springfield), Big Star, the Velvet Underground, the Who and Jimi Hendrix. Paisley Underground
Paisley Underground is a musical genre that originated in California. It was particularly popular in Los Angeles, reaching a peak in the mid-1980s. Paisley Underground bands incorporated psychedelia, rich vocal harmonies and guitar interplay, owing a particular debt to 1960s groups such as Love and the Byrds, but more generally referencing a wide range of pop and garage rock revival. Etymology The term "Paisley Underground" originated in late 1982, and took root with a comment made by Michael Quercio of the band the Three O'Clock, during an interview with the '' LA Weekly'' alternative newspaper. As the event was later reported: Quercio was close friends with Lina Sedillo who was the bass player with local punk band Peer Group, who had played on the same bill as The Salvation Army on occasion. The Velvet Underground
The Velvet Underground were an American Rock music, rock band formed in New York City in 1964. Its classic lineup consisted of singer and guitarist Lou Reed, Welsh multi-instrumentalist John Cale, guitarist Sterling Morrison, and percussionist Moe Tucker. Though their integration of rock and the avant-garde earned them little commercial success during their initial nine-year run, they are now widely regarded as one of the most influential bands in rock music, as well as Underground music, underground, Experimental music, experimental, and Alternative music, alternative music. Susanna Hoffs
Susanna Lee Hoffs (born January 17, 1959) is an American singer, songwriter, guitarist, and actress. With Debbi Peterson and Vicki Peterson, she founded the Bangles in 1981. Their debut album, ''All Over the Place (The Bangles album), All Over the Place'' (1984), was acclaimed by critics but sold poorly. Their second album, ''Different Light'' (1986), was also warmly received by critics and was certified Music recording certification#Certification thresholds, double-platinum in 1987 and triple-platinum in 1994. It contained the US number two single "Manic Monday" written by Prince (musician), Prince and the number one single "Walk Like an Egyptian". Vicki Peterson
Victoria Anne Theresa Peterson Cowsill (born January 11, 1958) is an American rock musician and songwriter. She has been the lead guitarist for the Bangles since their founding in 1981. After their first disbandment in 1989, she has returned to the band for all subsequent reunions. In intervening years, she has performed with other artists, most extensively with the Continental Drifters. Early life Peterson described herself as a solo artist in her early years – "I was a kid who brought her guitar to every sleep-over and summer afternoon in the park to play her newest creation to anyone who would listen…" In high school she formed a band that went through various incarnations as Crista Galli, Aishi, the Muze, the Fans, and Those Girls from 1976 to 1980. David Roback
David Edward Roback (April 4, 1958 – February 24, 2020) was an American guitarist, songwriter and producer, best known as a founding member of the alternative rock band Mazzy Star. Early life and education Roback was born on April 4, 1958, and he was raised in Los Angeles, a son of nurse Rosemary (née Hunter) and physician George Roback. He graduated from Palisades High School, before studying art at Carleton College and the University of California, Berkeley. He and his brother Stephen Roback, a bass guitarist, formed the band Unconscious alongside Susanna Hoffs, who would go on to become a member of the Bangles. Michael Quercio
Michael Quercio (born March 13, 1963) is an American musician. He is the founder, bassist and lead singer of the Three O'Clock, and coined the term Paisley Underground as the name of a musical subgenre. Paisley Underground Quercio is best known as the founding member, lead vocalist, and principal songwriter of the Three O'Clock, among the most successful artists of the neo-psychedelic movement of 1980s rock music that became known as the Paisley Underground. Kendra Smith (born March 14, 1960)Strong, Martin C. (2003) ''The Great Indie Discography'', Canongate, is an American musician who was a founding member of The Dream Syndicate, a member of Opal, and later recorded as a solo artist. Biography Smith, Steve Wynn and Russ Tolman met as students at UC Davis, where all three had shows on KDVS. With Steve Suchil on bass, Gavin Blair on drums, Wynn and Tolman on guitars, and Smith on lead vocals, they formed a garage band called the Suspects, who released one privately pressed single. Steve Wynn (born February 21, 1960) is an American singer, musician and songwriter. He led the band the Dream Syndicate from 1981 to 1989 in Los Angeles, afterward began a solo career, and then reformed the Dream Syndicate in 2012. Career Growing up in Los Angeles Wynn was born February 21, 1960, at St. John's Hospital in Santa Monica, California. Trouser Press
''Trouser Press'' was a rock and roll magazine started in New York in 1974 as a mimeographed fanzine by editor/publisher Ira Robbins, fellow fan of the Who, Dave Schulps, and Karen Rose under the name "Trans-Oceanic Trouser Press" (a reference to a song by the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band and an acronymic play on the British TV show ''Top of the Pops)''. Big Star
Big Star was an American rock band formed in Memphis, Tennessee in 1971 by Alex Chilton (vocals, guitar), Chris Bell (vocals, guitar), Jody Stephens (drums), and Andy Hummel (bass).
