Qikiqtarjuaq
Qikiqtarjuaq ( 'big island'; formerly known as Broughton Island until November 1998 ,) is a community located on Broughton Island in the Qikiqtaaluk Region of Nunavut, Canada. The island is known for Arctic wildlife ( ringed seals, polar bears, bowhead whales, narwhals), and bird watching at the Qaqulluit National Wildlife Area (''qaqulluit'' is the Inuktitut word for northern fulmar). The community serves as the northern access point for Auyuittuq National Park with Pangnirtung as the southern access point. Qikiqtarjuaq hosts an annual Suicide Prevention Walk. Local participants would walk a total distance of across the tundra from Kivitoo, an old whaling station. Today the walk is much shorter than the original two and a half days, but it is still meant to promote hope among the community. Broughton Island (Nunavut)
Broughton Island is a island in the Arctic Archipelago. Geography It is located above the Arctic Circle in the Davis Strait, off Baffin Island about west of the Cumberland Peninsula. To the east Baffin Bay, and the Baffin Mountains are located to the west, more specifically the Arctic Cordillera mountain range. Demographics The only community on the island is Qikiqtarjuaq with a population of 593. It is one of only eleven islands, out of more than 36,000, in the Arctic Archipelago that are inhabited. The Inuit residents of Qikiqtarjuaq moved there in 1963 from a whaling station at Kivitoo about north. Qikiqtarjuaq hosts an annual "Suicide Prevention Walk". ''Cabin Pressure'' is a radio sitcom written and created by John Finnemore and directed and produced by David Tyler. It follows the exploits of the eccentric crew of the single aeroplane owned by "MJN Air" as they are chartered to take all manner of items, people or animals across the world. The Qikiqtaaluk Region, Qikiqtani Region (Inuktitut syllabics: ᕿᑭᖅᑖᓗᒃ ) or the Baffin Region is the easternmost, northernmost, and southernmost administrative region of Nunavut, Canada. Qikiqtaaluk is the traditional Inuktitut name for Baffin Island. Auyuittuq National Park
Auyuittuq National Park (, , "the land that never melts") is a national park located on Baffin Island's Cumberland Peninsula, in the Qikiqtaaluk Region of Nunavut, the largest political subdivision of Canada. The park was initially known as ''Baffin Island National Park'' when it was established in 1972, but the name was changed in 1976 to its current name to better reflect the region and its history. The North Warning System (NWS, ) is a joint United States and Canadian early-warning radar system for the atmospheric air defense of North America. It provides surveillance of airspace from potential incursions or attacks from across North America's polar region. It replaced the Distant Early Warning Line system in the late 1980s. Uqqummiut (, Inuinnaqtun: Uqqurmiut) is a territorial electoral district ( riding) for the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut, Canada. The riding consists of the communities of Clyde River and Qikiqtarjuaq. The Member of the Legislative Assembly was Samuel Nuqingaq. On 24 October 2014, he was expelled for the legislature and the seat became vacant with a by-election to be held within six months. Kivitoo
Kivitoo is an abandoned Inuit community and a former whaling station on the northeast shore of Baffin Island in Nunavut, Canada. Kivitoo's Inuit families moved to Qikiqtarjuaq, approximately to the south, in 1963. Kivitoo Memorial Park remains at the southern shore of the hamlet. History In the early 20th century, the Sabellum Trading Company established a post at Kivitoo to service the whalers who would anchor there to flense carcasses. The post was abandoned in 1926. Kivitoo (qivittu) ( FOX-D) is also a former Distant Early Warning Line and is currently a North Warning System site. Because of a nearby small coastal plain, a short airstrip was built during early operation of FOX-D. The residents of Kivitoo were evacuated to Qikiqtarjuaq in 1963, purportedly for their safety, after three residents of the community were killed in a collapse of the ice under their igloos. Pangnirtung
Pangnirtung (or Pang, also Pangniqtuuq, in syllabics: ᐸᖕᓂᖅᑑᖅ ) is an Inuit hamlet in the Qikiqtaaluk Region of the Canadian territory of Nunavut, located on Baffin Island. The community is located about south of the Arctic Circle, and about from the North Pole. Pangnirtung is situated on a coastal plain at the coast of Pangnirtung Fjord, a fjord which eventually merges with Cumberland Sound. As of October 2024, the mayor is Stevie Komoartok. Name There is some confusion about the village name. Residents say the real name is ''Pangniqtuuq'', which means "the place of many bull caribou". Early in 2005 residents voted against officially changing the name of the village to the native one, as Pangnirtung has achieved an international reputation. Bowhead Whale
The bowhead whale (''Balaena mysticetus''), sometimes called the Greenland right whale, Arctic whale, and polar whale, is a species of baleen whale belonging to the family Balaenidae and is the only living representative of the genus '' Balaena''. It is the only baleen whale endemic to the Arctic and subarctic waters, and is named after its characteristic massive triangular skull, which it uses to break through Arctic ice.
