Puyuma People
The Puyuma (), also known as the Pinuyumayan, Peinan or Beinan, are one of the indigenous groups of the Taiwanese aborigines. The people are generally divided into the Chihpen and Nanwang groups, both resident in Taitung County on the east coast of Taiwan. In the year 2000, the Puyuma numbered 9,606. This was approximately 2.4% of Taiwan's total indigenous population, making them the sixth-largest indigenous group. The Puyuma speak the Puyuma language, as well as Standard Chinese, Mandarin and Taiwanese Hokkien. The name "Puyuma" means "unity" or "concord" and was originally the autonym of the speakers of the Nanwang dialect. Zeitoun and Cauquelin (2006) also note that the word Puyuma can be analyzed as ''pu'-uma'', which means "to send to the field". Tuhi Martukaw
Tuhi Martukaw or Jocelyn Ting-Hui Hung Chien () is a Taiwanese Pinuyumayan activist, journalist, diplomat, and educator. She was co-chair of the United Nations' Global Indigenous Youth Caucus from 2010 to 2015 and has represented Taiwan for 10 years at the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues. She is the founder and coordinator of LIMA Taiwan Indigenous Youth Working Group, which works to increase Indigenous youth outreach within Taiwan and foster connections with their international counterparts. She was selected as the leading candidate on the Democratic Progressive Party's party list ahead of the 2020 Taiwanese legislative election, but was afterwards removed from the list altogether, with the party citing her previous associations with the Kuomintang and her lack of political experience. Lü Jianzhong ( zh, t=呂建中; born 6 February 1982), better known by his stage name Tank, is a Taiwanese singer-songwriter. He is currently signed to HIM International Music. Panai Kusui
Panai Kusui (; Chinese name: ; born 1969) is a Taiwanese singer-songwriter, guitarist and social activist. Her parents are of the Puyuma and Amis tribes of southeastern Taiwan. Music career Panai's first album "ni-wa-wa" was released in 2000 and received an award as one of the top 10 albums of the year by the China Times. Panai has performed at Tiehua Music Village in Taitung City, which was established by the Lovely Taiwan Foundation to promote indigenous music and culture. She also performed at the fifteenth Migration Music Festival in 2017. In 2024, Panai won the Golden Melody Award for Best Taiwanese Album for ''Iā-Pô'' (夜婆). Samingad Purepurepuan (born 2 October 1977), known professionally as Hsiaochun (; zhuyin:ㄐㄧˋ ㄒㄧㄠˇㄐㄩㄣ) is an aboriginal Taiwanese pop singer and songwriter. She is an ethnic Puyuma, whose name means "unique". She was born in Taitung County, to a father of Bunun descent and a mother of Puyuma descent. Her uncle is Purdur, the winner of the Best Mandarin Male Singer of the 11th Golden Melody Awards. Her younger sister, Jia Jia, is also a singer. Samingad was discovered while singing in a restaurant, where she worked as a waitress. Her first album "Voice of Puyuma" was released with Magic Stone Records and received a Golden Melody Award for "Best New Artist" 1999. Y2J () is a Taiwanese rock band composed of two participants (Yuming Lai and Jane Huang) from the 2007 season of One Million Star, a singing competition. The band released its debut album "Live For You" on 25 August 2008. The two-member band's English name is derived Yuming Lai's first initial (Y), the number of band members (2), and Jane Huang's first initial (J). The band's Chinese name "Shenmu yu Tong", means "sacred tree and pupil (of the eye)". "Shénmù" (神木), meaning "sacred tree", comes from a large tree in Lai's village which shares the name "Yuming".
